This is the One City One Story selection for spring 2022 for the City of Pasadena California. I absolutely loved this book. Susan Straight's experiences reminded me of my childhood in north Orange County. Highly recommend!!

Just couldn’t get into this book. It could be bc I didn’t care for the narrator on the audio book. I also just couldn’t feel connected to any of the people. Even though I know they were real people, the way the story unfolded they sounded like stereotypes (or one dimensional). I feel bad saying that, since this is the author’s real family. But it all just seemed superficial. From a technical standpoint, there were too many characters, and the writing tried too hard to be lyrical.

Five Star Read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a really good listen to me. I loved the way she was the historian of her family and added the necessary context. Written in a simple, straightforward way but delivering a deeply insightful and textured history of the families she was born into, married into, and all the many women…black, white, mexican, indigenous, immigrant…who helped generations survive with sacrifice, hard work, good food…through violence, tragedy, loyalty, decisions and their consequences, crushing oppressive systems and their brute force determined to destroy everything in its path.

She wrote this memoir for her daughters. Such a gift.

A white woman marries a black man and they have three daughters. The woman writes this book about both sides of their family history, especially about the women. She writes about her time as a mother, and about her daughters.

There is a lot of sorrow and struggle in this story, but the writer draws out the strengths and triumphs of the women as a kind of gift for her girls. She writes it like a song , or a poem, or a prayer and it is beautiful.

Highly, highly recommended.

This is a hard book to review. I almost stopped half way through. Too many names, too many stories. I couldn't keep track. I guess that is the whole point. Susan and her beautiful daughters are all that and more--all the complex women that paved their way. I loved the second half very much.

this was written like a letter to her daughter, and it... felt like a letter to her daughter. that maybe could have stayed that way. it was fine and enjoyable enough, but it sort of felt like there wasn't really an arc or purpose to it besides relaying family history about a family i am not a part of.
