In the Country of Women: A Memoir by Susan Straight

5.0

A white woman marries a black man and they have three daughters. The woman writes this book about both sides of their family history, especially about the women. She writes about her time as a mother, and about her daughters.

There is a lot of sorrow and struggle in this story, but the writer draws out the strengths and triumphs of the women as a kind of gift for her girls. She writes it like a song , or a poem, or a prayer and it is beautiful.

Highly, highly recommended.
