Beautiful writing and a beautiful documentation of migration and family and ancestry. I don’t know if I would necessarily reread it—I think I’d give it a higher rating if I enjoyed biographical accounts more—but it’s definitely important and lovely.

Really liked it. Hard to keep up with all the family members sometimes but liked the format and her writing style. So much history and description to envision and read about through the direction to her daughters

My stepdad’s Rotary Readers picked this book this month, so I read it too. I don’t think I would have chosen it otherwise. Straight chronicles her female ancestors as well as the women of her husband’s lineage. Then about 2/3 of the way in, it switches to more individual essays on raising mixed race children. The stories themselves were somewhat interesting, but the overall story arc felt disjointed. It felt like maybe it should have been reformatted as an essay collection. I honor the general message though. These stories are not of famous women. They won’t be seen in history books or movies, but every woman’s story is important in some regard. All our possessions, our homes, and even our bodies are impermanent, but memories and stories can last forever if protected and passed down.

I liked this book but it was hard to follow who all of the stories were about. I’m not sure if that was because I listened to the audio version possibly. I did think it was a lovely tribute to her family and her husband’s family.

Easy to read, loved learning about this family. Author's style is creative and informative without being overly descriptive - not too wordy, I like that. I would for sure read more from her. I appreciate her perspective.

This book was best read as a series of essays, each chapter its own story. There were so many names to keep track of making it difficult for me to carry the threads as I read. So I stopped and appreciated the lives of the women I read about in their own right. While I did not attempt to make any kind of family tree, one would have been very helpful as a reference while reading.
