My heart is full.

This book has more scary elements than some of the others in the series do, but I will forever love it for bringing us some characters that I won't forget for the rest of my life. Fingal, who I named my cat after, always confident and easygoing and deeply loyal. Juniper, (who I will name a second cat after, should I ever get one), sensitive and kind and good. Cedar, who is strong and just and brave. Sepia, who is afraid, and still does the hard things. And little Hope - too pure for this world.

I know I will read these books over and over again for the rest of my life. Just thinking about them makes me emotional, and in a world that is so full of tragedy and loss and contempt, reading these books gives me hope for the good in people, and it shows me all the little things in life we can be grateful for.

a nice continuation of urchin's journey. urchin finds himself kidnapped by animals from a distant island. they believe urchin is the squirrel mentioned in a prophecy to save their island. i'm eager to read the third installment.

I've been really enjoying reading this series with my boys. It is such a sweet series while still being incredibly adventurous!
I just wish the books themselves were easier to get, as they are currently out of print. :(

This book is even better than the original. The plot is unique, the characters vivid, more of Urchin's past is revealed and the resolution is wonderful. Never before have I read a children's series with such a good sense of spirituality, in the form of the 'Heart'. It is a difficult topic for children's literature to handle religion and this book handles it incredibly well. It brings a sense of hope to the protagonists on their perilous journeys.
