Tense and fun all at once, this book delivers another excellent A-plot, but the B-plot isn't as memorable. The worldbuilding is certainly good, and the stakes are well presented, but it doesn't quite live up to the heights book one sets.

This is the first Mistmantle book I read (I know -- out of order.) Initially I thought it was simply a Redwall ripoff (I mean -- really? The castle is made of red sandstone?) But in many ways it's more nuanced than my friends from Mossflower ever could be.

Sadly, Brian Jacques is dead. But Margaret McAllister is not. And these books are just as enjoyable as Redwall in its heyday. I look forward to Urchin's continued adventures.

I did not like it quiet as much as the first cause the community focused way of handling a fantasy revolt against an unjust king is just great and here this is done outside the pages. I do like the new relationships and the way this characters support eachother.

The second in The Chronicles of Mistmantle series. When a delegation arrives from the island of Whitewings asking for Urchin's help he is tempted to go - as soon as Crispin is crowned king. Then he finds himself kidnapped and taken to Whitewings against his will. Once there he discovers he must save the island to save himself. As Crispin seeks to rescue Urchin, he discovers the Heartstone is missing and he can't be crowned without it. An excellent sequel to the first book. Fans of the Redwall series will love this one as well.
