0.03 - No Place Like Home
4.0 stars
This short takes place after Jonathan and Fran leave the no-longer-in-a-hell-dimension train, but skips ahead three months to the day when they finally arrive at the Healy home.
It's as lovely:
As it is heartbreaking. While it's clear that Fran is utterly uncomfortable in the presence of a loving family, she's got enough moxie to hold her own . . .
I think it's safe to say that Verity takes after her grandma Fran. Though it must be said, Jonathan's mother Enid is no shrinking violet.
I love these Baker/Healy/Price women.

It's as lovely:
She's left Arizona with a man she barely knew, all because he looked at a monster and saw a miracle--a miracle that was about to eat them, but a miracle all the same. The talking mice didn't hurt. How could she have stayed behind, when there were things like this in the world?

No Place Like Home continues Jonathan's and Fran's story as they arrive in Buckley. This story is slightly different from the rest as there are no monsters, and it is more or a set up for the coming stories.
While it was nice to read, it was really not something that I would recommend reading as a standalone. Luckily, you can get (almost all) short stories free from the author's website.

"HAIL! HAIL THE PRIESTESS OF UNEXPECTED VIOLENCE!"
After whisking her away from the circus, Jonathan takes Frances home to Michigan where he continues to open her eyes to the world of monsters living among them. The Aeslin mice make a few hilarious appearances and Fran gets to "meet the parents."

Next up for Short Story Saturday is No Place Like Home, the next story in the InCryptid series. It's number 0.03, which should tell you quite a lot about the number of shorts available. This short, along with so many others, is available for Seanan McGuire's Patreons.
Jonathan Healy knows a good thing when he's found it. In this instance, that would be Frances Brown. She's a stubborn, knife-totting carnie that thus far has been unphased by everything his life has thrown at her. That alone should be impressive.
So he's taking her home. The adventure that follows is a chaotic one because his family can't have a simple road trip. That would be too easy, especially given the day this story is set in.
This was yet another entertaining addition to the Jonathan/Fran story! I enjoyed their first adventure, but I feel like this is the one where I found myself actually getting attached to their characters. I'm hoping that feeling will grow as their stories continue!

Such a great short story, of Jonathan coming home, and Fran choosing it for her home! Really great read!

Adorable, I thought this short story was a very cute look in the past of this series.

A nice little breather story, this isn’t as action-packed as the prior two InCryptid prequels. I like that this serves as Frances’s larger introduction to the Cryptids and the Prices’ world (without the cryptids trying to kill her the whole time). It’s not as solid as the previous story, but I think it’s more due to the fact that this is largely character interaction as opposed to “shooting a lot of things that are going to eat us.” I wouldn’t say skip it, but don’t look down on the fact that there’s not a lot of action banter going on here.
