It took until probably 20% or so for it to really grab me. It has POVs focusing on characters with no explanation of who they are or why they are important. I liked the 2 FMCs POVs but when it would switch to some others I'd be like "WHO IS THIS?" and then spend way too long trying to figure out if the character was mentioned somewhere else and I just didn't remember who they were. Basically world building and character introductions were a bit strange but ultimately I became invested and really enjoyed the story.

Very promising start to a trilogy about morally grey lesbians with terrifying powers of magic and politics. Also stands fairly well on its own. It takes some time to start up and suck you in and likewise has a fairly long epilogue-like part at the end after the main plot drive has already been resolved. Great world-building though, good characters, and leaves lots of mysteries to be explored.

Fantastic world-building and character development!! The romance felt like the natural progression of the relationship (love at first sight stories always irk me a little), and it never overshadowed the political plot of the story. The depiction of the many facets (and moral grey-ness) of each female character also left me overjoyed! :-)

I was listening to the audio book and was having a hard time following along with the switching perspectives and some of the lore was confusing. My immersion was sort of lost because of it.  Maybe if I have a physical copy I'll be able to finish it one day.

Beginning of a high fantasy series based in an India-inspired setting. I enjoyed the world building and complicated nature of the characters, especially the women. The women in this series are allowed to be morally grey, and they show different facets of strength.
