Gripping, fast paced, shows the power of loss, love and hope.

This story was entertaining but too unbelieveable for me. I enjoyed it for the sake of easy reading and having a happy ending. Every once in a while you need a happy ending no matter how far-fetched.

Started out really great and interesting, very engaging premise. I found the characters entertaining and interesting, but eventually it just became too repetitive through the same actions. The plot gets really weak pretty much as soon as she goes to Puerto Rico - it seemed very circumstantial and wasn’t very solid to me. The ending really just made me mad - does she end up with Jake? She went through all the efforts, even when he and everyone else thought she was dead. He literally gave up, and then when she brings her back he barely says thank you and won’t let Abby see Emma, when she’s the reason they’re back together. He also never apologizes to Abby, which I think she partly deserves, as this was clearly premeditated circumstances and was not Abby’s fault that Emma was taken. I don’t know, this book overall left me frustrated with the way it ended, and although it start out really strong, it falls apart as you go.

I perhaps expected too much of The Year of Fog, nabbing it from a Target bookshelf and wishing it were non-fiction. That said here are my dislikes:

1) Too long. The search and Abby's feelings during was drug out. After 100 some odd pages, we weren't learning anything new either in the search for Emma or really about how our heroine was dealing with it.

2) Speaking of dealing with it, I do not buy the depth of Abby's relationship with Emma. There were so many recounted stories that were supposed to span only a year of time that I have to imagine she has a perfect memory and is recounting each and every second she spent with the daughter of her fiance that she doesn't live with.

That said, I thought the progression of the relationship between Emma's father and Abby was realistic and interesting and it is what made the book readable.

I finally got around to reading this book which was a gift from my husband's grandmother. It was interesting enough to keep me reading, and there were some sections that I felt were very well-written. However, the whole storyline and writing style felt a bit disjointed to me and there were a few crude parts that I felt did not add anything to the story. I never fell in love with any of the characters and felt that even the main characters felt a bit fuzzy around the edges. But, overall, it was an entertaining summer read.

Strong narrative drive. I find myself poring over the language and trying to understand the role of some of the characters introduced, especially in the flashbacks.

. I liked the ending. The beginning was OK. The middle dragged way too much. It is the story of a woman who “loses” her fiancée’s daughter as she walks on the beach. She takes her eyes off of her for a few moments and she disappears into the fog. I can’t count the times the main character repeats some variation of “if I hadn’t looked away”. The replaying of the pivotal scene got to be a bit tiresome. Yes, the story was captivating and intriguing, but there was a little too much time spent on the discussion of memory---especially since memory played a tiny role in the ending. The real story for me was this woman’s determination and focus on finding her daughter.

Not my favorite so far, hopefully it'll get better.

Well, it didn't get better. I found this book slow and tedious. I wanted to move along and find out what happened to the child, but was bogged down with her flashbacks, that to me, really didn't connect with the problem at hand other than a reflection on memory. I had a hard time getting through this one.
