The Year of Fog by Michelle Richmond

2.0

. I liked the ending. The beginning was OK. The middle dragged way too much. It is the story of a woman who “loses” her fiancée’s daughter as she walks on the beach. She takes her eyes off of her for a few moments and she disappears into the fog. I can’t count the times the main character repeats some variation of “if I hadn’t looked away”. The replaying of the pivotal scene got to be a bit tiresome. Yes, the story was captivating and intriguing, but there was a little too much time spent on the discussion of memory---especially since memory played a tiny role in the ending. The real story for me was this woman’s determination and focus on finding her daughter.
