I read this for work book club and I am giving it a 3.5 star but rounding up.
This book follows families in Milwaukee as they navigate the housing issues due to poverty. I think there will be a lot of mixed reactions to the poverty and decisions that some people made with their money but I think until you have lived in their situations it is hard to say what we would do to try to feel good for a quick minute.
I work as a social worker and have for years in Milwaukee and surrounding areas so this is not new to me in terms of content. This is what I work and do everyday. It is a constant battle of slumlords knowing there is a sector of people that could be capitalized off of because they will never pass the background checks necessary for HUD or private affordable housing options so they jerk them around. It is frustrating and continues to land the individuals in situations of evictions that will forever make it difficult for them to get out of.
If you want to understand that I think this is a great book. Matthew's recommendation is not a bad one. I think people are confused with another governmental program like Matthew is explaining but we don't have the infrastructure to support programming like this in our current political systems. I think a universal voucher program would eliminate a lot of the issues but I also worry that we would have a lot of rental owners that would leave the housing market because their get rich quick wouldn't work. We also do not have the homeless shelters to house those people until housing is made or worked out. It will also not eliminate the need for more MH, AODA and other supportive programming to ensure that poverty and trauma is not causing the housing areas to be ridden with crimes that would put individuals and families in unsafe situations. I think that the book left some more questions at the end and wanting to explore more that way. Other countries that adopt universal housing vouchers also have social programming to help people more with the other issues and have decriminalized a lot of different drugs and sex work and all of that would need to happen to still make this a successful option I feel.

I wanted to love this book but what I love about a marriage of convenience trope was missing with this one. I love the tension, the awkward sort of moments of touches, build and this one felt more insta love-y. It is hard to do in a book under 200 pages which might be part of the issue but if you want an low angst book this one might for you.

This book was good and hard and made me cry.
This is written by an Indigenous author and follows the niece, Perry of Daunis from Firekeeper’s Daughter. It’s a YA thriller and the themes that this author writes into her books when it comes to Indigenous issues such as MMIW crisis and the exploitation that some predators use with the loopholes within the two systems is so frustrating, also the discussions of artifacts and the NAGPRA, a federal law that allows the tribes to obtain ancestral remains and sacred items just really hit me with how disrespected we as white people continue to be towards Indigenous people and respect for their people and culture.

This book proves that you do not need spice in a romance book to be popular. It was everywhere on booktok and I caved and I am so glad that I did. The TENSION, PINING, BUILD were everything I love in a romance book. I didn't realize this was book 2 and so I am picking up book 1.
I also love the small town folks in it! They reminded me of Gilmore Girls.

Why are there so many cops in this series. Also there is a shooting aspect that happens and it was like 😬 is this some internal cop protection coming out.
I didn’t feel like the romance aspect was strong at all. It was actually pretty weak very insta-lovey built on sex and nothing else really.
I liked the glimmer into Lylas character but Vance was just eh for me. Also part of this book felt like something out of Verity by CoHo do with that as you may.
CW: drug addiction, alcoholism, strangulation, murder, child murder, shooting mentioned in detail, injury

I don’t know how I’m going to recover after reading this trilogy with this couple. Mall and Chris has my whole heart and I just am not ready to let them go and I’m 😭
The way that Chris loves Mall made me question life as I know it. I love my husband and he loves me but damn I feel mediocre compared to this kind of love. Like it’s epic.
Also Chris’s dad can rot in the bottom of the ocean somewhere. I hate that man.
This is definitely the ending we needed and deserved but now I don’t know what to do with my life.

This was okay. I love the 90s throwback but I don’t think that there is emotional depth to the characters. I feel like there could be more there.

4.5 ⭐️
Such a good historical-ish sapphic graphic novel! I enjoyed this one a lot. I like the discussion of ethical clothing choices and the cheese names were funny. Also I loved a good grilled cheese. Seeing the authors note and how so much of this novel is inspired about her relationship with her wife was incredible.

This is such a cute YA romance with fake dating.
Bethany is known as Crybaby Bethany after busting out crying when she finds out her friends had sex. She is a late bloomer and cries over things that are cute, sad, mad you name it. She is the only one without a date to Homecoming in her friend group. Her best friend offers up her boyfriend, Jacob and right before the dance her friend breaks up with Jacob and the 2 of them make a pact to go anyways but also fake date.
Jacob needs to get some credit that he is not always dumped and Bethany needs to show the guy she is crushing on that she is not a crybaby.
The friendships, fake dating, conversations about going along with your parents desired plans vs your own and growing up just all worked together for such a cute YA book.
Fat rep: Bethany is fat, she plays sports and loves to cook. There was some comments about health and eating during basketball season by her mom that is addressed but overall Bethany is a happy confident in her body teen.

This is such a cat and mouse type situation with Macalister, Royce’s dad wanting what his son has and the games he wants to play to possess Marist but she feels so conflicted between emotions and desire. This series is like catnip and you don’t want to look away from it.
It will not be for everyone with the taboo/ dark aspects of it.
