Emma Tupper is grieving her mother’s death. When her mother’s final gift to her is a trip to Africa, Emma takes the trip, putting her life and career as a litigation lawyer on hold.
While in Africa, Emma gets sick, and her month long trip turns into 6 months. When she gets home, she finds that her apartment has been rented to a photographer named Dominic, her things gone, her boyfriend has moved on and her cases have been reassigned.
Now that her life has been upended, Emma has to reconsider her life choices. While rebuilding her caseload, she is assigned to an insurance case involving a missing Manet painting.
Part investigation, part romance, part finding yourself, this is a cute story. There were too many holes to give it a higher rating though.

What would happen if you were gone for 6 months with no communication to those who you are close with? That was the big question that I came up with when thinking about this book. Emma endures the passing of her mom and ends up on an African trip that went from 1 month to 6 months due to illness, earthquake and adventure. When she gets back into the States, she has to deal with a world that moved on without her.

Catherine McKenzie has done it again! I read her first novel, Spin, in January of this year and loved it. You can read my thoughts about Spin HERE. I loved the writing and loved the characters and was excited to see what was next from this awesome author. When I was asked to read and review her third novel, Forgotten, I was ecstatic! I also have her second book, Arranged, sitting on my bookshelf and I really need to get it down and get it read. So far, I have loved everything she has written and her books just keep getting better and better.

Emma Tupper is a successful lawyer who finds herself taking a one month trip to Africa after making a promise to her dying mother. Well, due to circumstances beyond her control, the one month turns into 6 months. When she finally makes it back to her life, where everyone assumed she had died, she has a hard time deciding if she wants to keep that life, and the people in it, or if it's time to make some changes.

'I've been thinking about it a lot lately, ever since, well, you know. And the thing that keeps occurring to me, the only positive thing, is that I can start over. How many people have a chance to change something major in their lives without having to suffer the consequences?'

I love that the themes of Catherine's books seem to be about looking at ourselves and our lives and deciding if this is where we really want to be. Her characters go through a lot of growing up and self-reflection about what makes them happy, something we should all try to do, right?

Like I said, this is the second book of Catherine's that I have read and she has now become a 'must-read' author for me. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for her books as they are published and I will be putting them at the top of my TBR list.

This book was okay. I enjoyed the idea of the plot but the actual presentation was just very blah. Would not recommend.

I really enjoy Catherine McKenzie’s books! They always have an interesting story-line that really sucks the reader in. This one was no different, and I was hooked from the prologue.

I had two little quips about some missing details. When Emma returns home, everything is shut off. Her bank account is frozen and she has no money and no place to live. The police give her a form to reactivate her bank account, but we never actually see her do this. Even a throwaway line saying that she finally got all her money back, or something to at least acknowledge the fact that she had done this would be nice. Instead we see her get the form and then go on a shopping spree. That kind of bugged me.

Another thing that bothered me was Dominic and Emily at the end of the story. He even says to Emma that it’s not what it looks like. Okay, well then what is it? We never got any explanation as to what had when down between those two before he came back to Emma. These are tiny things that bugged me, but overall did not ruin the book for me.

Emma is a sympathetic character that you cannot help but root for, and her friendships with Stephanie and Dominic are fun to read. I enjoyed reading about Emma getting back into her job and wondered if she really loved it, or felt an obligation.

Once again, Catherine McKenzie takes an unusual premise and delivers an amazing story that will keep you entertained for hours!

This the fourth book of Catherine McKenzie's that I have read. Although I did enjoy it, I found it not as great as the others. I found it harder to "get into".
