Well, I absolutely would have fallen in love with this series when I was younger - I really liked it as an adult, haha. I bought this one to read for The Storygraph's Reads The World Challenge for Venezuela, and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. Besides all the fun, mystical adventure, it really showcases friendship, trust, and reliability. And it has a hefty dose of mystery that resolves with a twist, plus a cliff-hanger to keep you coming back for more - I'll definitely read the other 2 books in the series!

lighthearted mysterious
  • Definitely set in the modern day. Book refers to 'wikipedia', 'GPS' and 'texting' (ala 2010-ish)
  • I liked their take on creatures and the canon they set down for them
  • Mini mystery from intentional sabotage to MIA-Mom was interesting.
  • Also, because there were "thousands of magical habitats throughout history" a government agency has been formed for oversight on the magical world.

Ending is a bit like the opening of a second book (which I know there is)

Cute little fantasy story - definitely the kind that I would have enjoyed as a kid. I only read it to fulfill a prompt for a book set in a place starting with X, but I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would.

A fun middle school book

I really enjoyed this book. Even though the idea of a secret menagerie with magical animals isn't a new idea, Tui T. Sutherland makes it seem fresh and interesting thenks to her amazing writing.

I loved the book. The characters were all unique and the character development was entertaining to watch.
I liked the plot. I also liked that I did not realize how close I was to the end of the book until it was almost over. (I think I had about four pages left when I realized it was ending.) I loved this because I don't really like the books where they drag the ending out for two or three chapters. Another thing I liked about the plot was that everything tied together. There was nothing causally mentioned that didn't become important later on. (Except maybe the dragons? But the next book has dragons in the name, so maybe Logan and I can see them.)
Overall this was a good read.
