Cute little fantasy story - definitely the kind that I would have enjoyed as a kid. I only read it to fulfill a prompt for a book set in a place starting with X, but I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would.

A fun middle school book

I really enjoyed this book. Even though the idea of a secret menagerie with magical animals isn't a new idea, Tui T. Sutherland makes it seem fresh and interesting thenks to her amazing writing.

I loved the book. The characters were all unique and the character development was entertaining to watch.
I liked the plot. I also liked that I did not realize how close I was to the end of the book until it was almost over. (I think I had about four pages left when I realized it was ending.) I loved this because I don't really like the books where they drag the ending out for two or three chapters. Another thing I liked about the plot was that everything tied together. There was nothing causally mentioned that didn't become important later on. (Except maybe the dragons? But the next book has dragons in the name, so maybe Logan and I can see them.)
Overall this was a good read.

I give this book a 3.5. It is definitely a fun middle grade novel full of mythical creatures. There are mysteries involved that are not easily solved. I will definitely pick up the next book in the series. I'd love to get a copy for my classroom as well.

Logan lives with his dad in Xanadu, Wyoming. His mom had left him when he was young. One morning, Logan woke up to find feathers around the room. These feathers seemed to be turning up everywhere.

He came home from school to find a baby griffin under his bed. When two kids from his school, Zoe and Blue, started acting strangely, he knew that his griffin was connected. He named the griffin Squorp.

Squorp kept talking about the Menagerie, so Logan asked him to take him there. Once he was through a gate, an alarm sounded. Two people came rushing to the gate. Those two people were Zoe and Blue.

Logan told them all about what had happened. What shook them was that he could hear Squorp talk, humans couldn't. Zoe and Blue told him how griffins had started to disappear and how SNAPA, the government agncy who controls menageries, would shut them down if they found out that griffins were missing.

They worked as a team to find the other griffins and snuck back and put them back.

Zoe and Blue were both grateful for helping to find the missing griffins.

Definitely geared to a younger audience. Magical creatures, teenage drama…not my cup of tea.
