Definitely set in the modern day. Book refers to 'wikipedia', 'GPS' and 'texting' (ala 2010-ish)
I liked their take on creatures and the canon they set down for them
Mini mystery from intentional sabotage to MIA-Mom was interesting.
Also, because there were "thousands of magical habitats throughout history" a government agency has been formed for oversight on the magical world.
