⭐️5⭐️ An incredible re-telling of *a portion of* the arguments in the California Prop 8 case, to determine if making same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The author pulled dialogue from the actual court transcripts & added in beautiful personal stories of the people involved. This cast is ALL STAR & AMAZING. I was brought to tears. HIGHLY recommend!

I really loved this. The play was great to listen to. They all did an excellent job, which isn't surprising. But it was wonderful having so many high named actors/actresses supporting this cause!

With George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, Kevin Bacon and Jamie Lee Curtis as part of this all star cast, obviously the narration was brilliant. I can't believe that this all happened to recently, and that people can still be so closed-minded.

8 is an American play that portrays the closing arguments of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, a federal trial that led to the overturn of Proposition 8—an amendment eliminating rights of same-sex couples to marry in California. It was created by Dustin Lance Black in light of the court's denial of a motion to release a video recording of the trial and to give the public a true account of what transpired in the courtroom.

I didn't read the book but I just watched the premiere of the play before it went to Broadway (it's available on Youtube).

It was so amazing. The amount of work Dustin Lance Black put into it is so huge. I have read his memoirs so I knew how much he had worked on this case but literally seeing it like this, watching it in a play form is breathtaking.

The actors are all incredible (especially Chris Colfer).

I was deeply moved at the end when the actual plaintiffs of this case, as well as the lawyers, came on the stage. You can see that they're all thankful for DLB's work but also they're simply all congratulating each other for this incredible thing they managed to do together.

And believe it or not, the play is also funny!

Unbelievable audio cast!!! Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, George Clooney, Kevin Bacon, Vanessa Garcia, Christine Lahti, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bridger Zadina, Jensen Panettiere, Matt Bomer, Matthew Morrison, Yeardley Smith, Rory O'Malley, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (<3), James Pickens, Jr, Chris Colfer, John C. Reilly (!), George Takei, Cleve Jones, Jane Lynch, Campbell Brown!

It takes 3 and a half weeks of testimony from the Prop 8 case and offers it up to the audience with love, humor and compassion. The cast alone is worth the listen, but I also enjoyed all the extra features at the end, including commentary from the two lawyers that took on Prop 8- Ted Olson and David Boies. Olson and Boies had once squared off in the Bush/Gore challenge, but the two men came together to challenge a ruling they both felt was against the Constitution and basic human rights. Marriage equality does not have to be a political party platform, and the strives made in just the last few years have been a long time coming and I think generations being born right now will grow up in a world where, for them, they could always marry whomever they choose- no matter race or sexual identity.

How does including same-sex marriage harm our society, our children, and the institution of marriage? This LA Theatre readers' play started with the closing arguments and then did flashbacks to hear the witness testimony of the 2010 trial challenged California's Proposition 8which denied gay and lesbian couples the right to get married. It astonished me how overwhelming the evidence was FOR same-sex marriage. The opposition to gay marriage had no defense and realized their opinions were just that under oath. The opposition witnesses actually made the case for allowing same-sex marriages. Major stars volunteered to participate in this radio play, and it is followed by interviews with original lawyers from both sides of Prop 8 and with the playwright and director. The actors' expressive delivery combined with actual plaintiff comments made this very understandable and easy to listen to. The original trial was not allowed to be broadcast live, but the author actually was present throughout much of the actual 2010 trial, and wrote this play from original court transcripts and interviews with the plaintiffs. An incredible look at a bit of U.S. history. Well worth listening to by anyone interested in the topic.

A short play about the court case that struck down California Proposition 8 (the statute banning gay marriage) upon appeal. All-star cast reading from actual court transcripts and testimony. Most excellent. . .
