[b:Magic Mourns|11027748|Magic Mourns (Kate Daniels, #3.5)|Ilona Andrews|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1306015342s/11027748.jpg|16633028] is probably my favorite of the Kate Daniels novellas. Andrea Nash is not a character to whom I paid much attention prior to this read. In addition to watching her try to come to grips with some stuff in her life, we also see her chasing down Cerberus. With the assistance of Raphael the sexy werehyena and Thanatos, Angel of Death, who happens to be a guy living in a trailer park named Teddy. How could that not be awesome?

This is a novella set after the 3rd book. I really enjoyed that this was from a different characters POV. In this book you get further insight and character development for Andrea. There is also a sneaky chapter at the end from another POV which gives you a little further insight into both Kate and Curran's magic.

I really enjoyed the plot of this one and how it brought the mythology of Persephone and Hades into it. It was great to get to know more of Andrea's backstory as it allowed her choices to make more sense as well as the dynamics between her and Raphael. I also loved the development between the 2 of them in this novella. Whilst I don't think it necessary to read this novella for the series, I certainly think it adds to it.

Short story about Andrea and Raphael that takes place after Magic Strikes. I'm glad they got stuff resolved, Andrea opening about her past, but I missed Kate.

I didn't like this as well as the stories told from Kate's POV, but it was still pretty good.

Jan 2024, original read. I am trying to read (re-read) the Kate Daniels series in order and color me surprised that I have missed a few! This is one and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Its Andrea and Raphael, takes place during the 2 months of rock crushing punishment doled out by the Beast Lord. Raphael gets a pass since Aunt B had a husband die and his corpse is missing! Solid story but its the Andrea/Raphael story that makes it shine.

Andrea comes across Raphael and a 3 headed dog, rescues him:
I growled under my breath. Of course, he could’ve stayed conscious had he not changed into a human.
But he knew that if he shifted shape, he would pass out on the seat next to me, nude, and I would be forced to stare at him until he slept it off. He had done it on purpose.
The werehyena Casanova strikes again. I was getting really tired of his ridiculous pursuit.
-----------
The sinful smile was back.
“I always dreamt of being naked with you. Couldn’t pass up the chance.”
I started the Jeep. “Could you get any more full of yourself?”
“I’m mostly interested in getting you full of me.”

Andrea has a horror story for a childhood and they are able to share some truths to try to make a relationship work. This was lovely:
“You’re my Artemis,” Raphael said. I blinked. “Fierce, prickly, beautiful huntress, forever pure and uncompromising.”
Prickly? More like bitchy. “I’m not that pure.”
-----------
I sat next to him.
“If I die, will you grieve for me?” he asked.
“Yes. But before I do that, I’ll fight to save you.”
“Why?”
I put my hand onto his furry forearm. “Because I feel good when you’re near me. It’s not just sex, and it isn’t loneliness, it’s more than that. It’s kind of frightening. I think that’s why I fought it for so long.”
