I won't pretend that Dan Brown's books are super deep or written the most eloquently. But goddamn, the plots are fun and the conspiracy theories run amok. Plot armor so think it's amazing the characters can still move at all. God I fucking love Dan Brown.

I have started this book multiple times in the past and for some reason never gotten past a certain point. This time I pushed myself onward and I’m glad I did.
This was a fun and thrilling mystery that hooked me in with every twist and turn once the main plot of the book got going. Although towards the very end of the book it felt a little too much like a soap opera with it’s wild revelations.
I will say that there isn’t a ton of character development and the relationship angle between the main character Robert Langdon and the female main character Vittoria Vetra wasn’t really there. They seemed to make better partners and equals than romantic partners. It felt a little too forced.
I know there’s also a lot of doubt claims of inaccurate information reading the history and legends surrounding the Illuminati and other historical figures mentioned so I tried to take all of that in more as historical fiction than historical fact.
All in all this was what I expected and wanted from this novel. It was a fun action adventure that moved along at a pretty decent pace.

I was all prepared to give this book two stars, but
Spoiler
the surprise ending bumped it up to three. The sexist and racist overtones of the book were distracting and unnecessary (the bad guy is the only person described as a person of color in the book, and he's repeatedly described as "a beast" and an emphasis is placed on his dark skin and Arabic language), and I wasn't particularly captivated by the narrator or his obsession with symbology. However, the whole point of reading this book was for a plot-driven, captivating escape and it certainly was exciting and had high stakes-- in a way, it was like reading a movie. And in the end, the final chapters did bring some of the more nonsensical, Q-anon-fantasy aspects of the book back down to earth and they made a bit more sense.
i’ve been fascinated by Dan Brown’s writing for years, since around 2015. and he still manages to blow me away every time. honestly, the man is a genius. i’d love the chance to pick his brain someday, just to understand how he comes up with these intricate plots.
what i really admire is how he blends history, science, and religion so seamlessly. it never feels overwhelming or dull and he always keeps the reader engaged. it’s a rare skill, and he nails it every time.
a perfect book! ❤️
EDIT:
watched the movie last night… dramatic sigh. and once again, i must scream it from the mountaintops: THE BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER! why, oh why, can’t they just follow the book? is it really that hard?
