This was a fun book at times (especially with the jungle boys), and I realize that I shouldn't quibble with some of the details (after all, it's about aliens: it can't be realistic!) The narrator did a nice job with all of the voices, from the sardonic Shrub to the gentle Grandma. The caricature of the sheriff was a bit much for me, as were some of the painful conversations between Shrub and Amy. Do you really think Grandma would send the jungle boys out on a camping trip alone with David/Shrub? Like I said, it is aliens, after all.

Summer at the Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast with his estranged grandmother was not what David (aka Scrub) had in mind for his summer. There was the basketball team to practice for and his best friend to do dares with, yet he was shipped off so his parents could focus on their work. But that was nothing new for Scrub, as they did this to him most summers, sending him many places over his childhood years.

When he arrives, Scrub encounters a strange towering fellow in front of his grandma’s B & B, and it is quickly apparent that things will be anything but boring this summer after all. Mr. Harnox might be the unlucky guest of the inn but proves to be a killer on the basketball court, as Scrub is fortunate to find out.

As fate would have it, Amy, a bubbly lover of all things alien, happens upon Scrub around town, and they become fast friends. She knows of his grandma’s place and is eager to learn more, which could make it difficult for him to keep the secret of what’s going on within its walls. It won’t be any more difficult than staying off the radar of her father: Sheriff Tate.

David’s grandmother entrusting him with secrets and responsibility offers him a new sense of confidence, and even as he tests the limits of what he has been charged to do, by the novel’s nail-biting conclusion, his ingenuity and ability take centre stage.

Clete Barrett Smith is a creative and thoughtful writer. This middle-grade story offers quirky, richly drawn characters, and I had a blast narrating their different voices to my howling 7-year-old son. You can listen to an excerpt I posted for Storytime Sunday last month here.

There are important lessons to be learned while the themes of family, friendship, responsibility, and acceptance fill the pages. If was fun to watch the whole thing come together at the end, although I wasn’t at all sure how that would be until it was upon us. We were also thrilled to see this was the first in the Intergalactic Bread & Breakfast Series, when stumbling upon the first chapter of the second volume, Aliens on a Rampage, in the back of the book. We were sure to add it to our library queue post haste!

Visit peachybooks.ca here to find Zarnox, the alien bookmark I was inspired to crochet after meeting all the extraterrestrial travellers in Aliens on Vacation. This cutie was lucky enough to holiday in our backyard here in sunny Canada, and I can tell you, more fun has never been had this side of the Milky Way! 👽😉

While a bit contrived, this is a fun read. I think it especially appeals to 'tween SF/F readers. It's more a 3.5 star book. The narration suited the book beautifully.

David Elliott, “Scrub” to everyone who knows him, has been shipped off by his parents to rural Washington State to spend the summer with his eccentric grandmother. He’s not happy about being banished to the middle of nowhere where there’s no internet and no cell phone service; he’d rather be back at home in Tampa working on his basketball game. Worse than that, Grandma doesn’t seem to know the 1960s are over. She runs a place called The Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast; the décor is vintage Sci-Fi; the food is all vegetarian. “The welcome mat was decorated with clusters of stars grouped together to spell out ALL ARE WELCOME WHO COME IN PEACE.” And the guests are really, really, really strange. There’s the tall skinny guy with gray skin that sniffs at mailboxes and the family that crawls down the hall on all fours. And soon Scrub will meet some that are even stranger!

There’s suspense, laughs, purple slime, and plenty of aluminum foil munching, as Scrub tries to keep the local Sheriff from discovering the true origin of Grandma’s guests.

This e-book had been resided on my cellphone like forever, and every now and then I read it 2-3 pages (that is when I really don't have anything else to read). But somehow, few days ago, I decided that it was time to finished it, so there it was.....

David a.k.a. Scrub was sent to his Grandma through summer vacation. Little did he know that b&b which Grandma run was really a tourist spot.... for intergalactic race that is. While the tourists themselves were quite handful, a curious girl and a suspicious sheriff added to that mix, making David summer job never easy and far from boring.

The story itself was ok, the characters and descriptions of the tourists were interesting, but that was it. Nothing more. And I didn't really fond with the ending, especially las letter David sent to his friend Tyler. I think he was too cocky and over confident. Sooooo teenager!
