The book feels both complete and incomplete. The way the first book in a series is, or a season finale - or, instead, the penultimate episode of a season. The way graduation is. Fitting, given the transitional period Laila finds herself in. Fulfilling, with some finality, but still more waiting on the next blank page. Waiting to be written.

“Interrogate your instincts. Insecurity isn’t shameful. Attraction isn’t an embarrassment. Interpersonal affection isn’t a side note to be glossed over. Whatever the nature of the material that forms between two people, it’s the backbone of literature.”

Final Draft is a fast-paced story of a girl losing herself in her mission to become a better writer. Laila loves writing her sci-fi stories and her teacher always praises her talent, but when he falls ill, she has to deal with his replacement. Nadiya Nazarenko is a Pulitzer Prize–winning writer … but she’s wholly unimpressed with Laila’s writing. Laila is devastated, but eager to earn her idol’s approval, which leads her to go on increasingly eccentric assignments in order to introduce excitement and life into her stories. The exploration of his chaotic and unhealthy mindset was really well done! I was still ticked off that Nadiya got away with giving such horrible advice and dishing out bad grades to all students for so long, it’s a wonder no one did anything to stop her!

This book was just ok. The plot was nice and intriguing however there was not buildup to sudden things that developed in the book. In addition some character felt creepy and awkward in the story. The ending also felt a little bit rushed and confusing at the end.  This book was just average.

NEW FAVOURITE BOOK UNLOCKED !!!!

- biracial and plus-sized main character (who is a WRITER)
- slowburn sapphic friends-to-lovers
- mental health and perfectionism
- 'found family' friendship group
- diverse cast of characters
- coming of age
- sci-fi themes

I don't care about any disparaging critique or what anyone else has to say about this book, I am obsessed with it. This book SPEAKS TO ME. In a way that makes me want to burst out crying because I've never felt more understood.

I've related to many fictional characters throughout my life, but Laila's character truly pierced into the very core of my identity. Everything from Laila's struggles as a writer to her biracial identity crisis - I relate so much to almost every aspect of this character that I feel as if I have been scrubbed raw after completing this book. Heck, I even have a little sister who is both similar in age and personality to Camille!

Is this book really the perfect depiction of the battles of teenagers on the cusp of adulthood or does this book just perfectly relate to my own experiences? I have no idea. All I know is that I love this book. And I need a physical copy ASAP because I need to reread and annotate and cry over the perils of grief and desire and teenage depression and-

just read this book and find out for yourself :')
