DNF - I stopped about 20% (60+ pages) in. There really wasn't anything wrong with Six Sacred Swords by Andrew Rowe, it wasn't for me.

The premise of the novel is interesting enough . . . a young man goes on adventures to find six sacred swords of legend, meeting wizards, mythical creatures, and riddle speaking individuals while collecting various items to "power up" to the next level.

The issue I had with the novel is with Mr. Rowe's narrative choices. I found the story's narrator, Keras Selyrian, generally unlikeable and extremely arrogant. While those traits aren't an automatica deal breaker if handled well, the issue is that they were not handled well here. Keras came across as extremely smug, self-entitled, and rude; the attempts at self-deprecating humor rang false and a little to "meta" for my tastes.

Meh. There's so much exposition inside the hero's head. Not a lot actually happens. He's supposed to be some kind of badass but he thinks better of himself than his performance deserves. I've reached the end of a 300 page book and there's no resolution whatsoever. Oh also he is so careful to offer everyone a choice in case they are performing their role of opposing him through coercion or not realizing they have a choice. It's exhausting and it's annoying. It's also pretty presumptuous that you only oppose him because poor ignorant you knows no better. I won't be reading any more of these.

In the mood for something progression-y.

Yes yes yes! This is exactly what I’m talking about! Lots and lots of character interaction and playful banter. This is what gets me invested in characters and so I really cared about all of them and thus the outcome of the fights, because while plot development is fairly slow, there is still enough action, at least for me.

I can’t for the life of me understand why this was not possible for the other series. It makes no sense to me to develop a character like Keras who appears in multiple series in this one instead of the first series he appears in.

funny lighthearted

The slightly flirty conversations between a hero, a dragon and a sword are simply hillarious.
