Boyhood is a time of being overlooked; everyone has a way they believe you ought to be behaving and plenty of orders to guide you in that direction. But rarely does it seem like anyone cares for what you think. Boyhood is a time of being alive and having thoughts and trying to find a place in the world in which you can stand and make a difference, but you aren’t treated like a real person yet. Boyhood is long and big and confusing and sometimes scary. There’s a lot to do and experience and sometimes the things we see don’t make any sense. Boyhood is a time to make sense of all of these things that don’t make sense and nobody seems to care to help you along on this process.
Good book, good read, lots to chew on. Characters could be a bit flat, but it was a short hundred pages. And maybe that’s how the adults of our childhood were: flat, dimensionless facades of real people. The author used his space well. Would recommend

I picked this up again after reading it in high school. Steinbeck, as always, is both economical and evocative in his writing. The book is actually four interrelated short stories about the same characters on the same ranch with coming-of-age and end-of-life themes. I can't imagine who wouldn't enjoy reading this book.

How else could I describe this collection of vignettes other than I now need to lay down and hug my dog and never let go.

"Wisdom is wasted on the Old"
A lovely depressing short story... I think the hardest thing about getting older is remembering our own emotions and feelings we had when growing up.
Steinbeck deftly beats around the "coming of age" bush in this short story and I think the older you are the more you would appreciate its prose and its meanings.
The Truth is a difficult thing.

**spoiler alert** I just wanted a cute story about a kid and his horse, man!! I knew going in it was mostly episodic, and I really enjoyed the structure! Every night before bed I read an episode. The first one was devastating, but beautifuly written. I think my favorite of Jody's stories was the third, which ended in the c section for his new pony. My stomach absolutely dropped when the field hand starting saying "oh my God, somethings wrong". The last one was good too, and overall was a good read! But what really made this special was the inclusion of Junius Matby. Oh my God, Junius is a new favorite. the obvious garden of Eden parallel was so well executed, making such a fun and cute story end on a sad note. I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time reading this story, I can't wait to recommend it to others.
