Fast paced read about a teenager struggling with schizophrenia and his pursuit to keep it hidden and be normal with a drug. It's written as journal entries to his therapist.
I enjoyed this format, I found it an easy read. While I enjoyed the overall book I did feel the depth of Maya was missing. This story read as if there was no beginning and no end to this story. It started where it needed to ended because it was time, which is not a negative entirely but it could have had more structure.

Really well done. The unique writing style worked well and Adam was extremely entertaining. I really felt for him and I loved his family and friends. Funny at points but also had a lot of heart.

I wasnt too fond of the main character at first, but then I realized it was because he was so much like me. Adam was a bit selfish sometimes, he frequently thought he was losing his mind and coped with humor and witty banter with the hallucinations he had. He questioned the Catholic church and there were themes on hypocrisy surrounding the religion, which was unexpected, but made the book much more thought provoking and interesting. There was real character development and I was only a BIT uncomfortable at the teen sex scenes (oh hell yeah!). I see it as a mash between the Perks of Being a Wallflower and Heretics Anonymous (both fantastic reads).
This is a young adult book and (seemingly) a good representation of a student with schizophrenia. If anything, it helped me understand this mental illness more than I knew before. I didn't care for how this story was delivered. Adam wasn't non-verbal yet he chose to not speak to his doctors , so this entire book is a written account of his life and experiences- it would have been better to do this story in "real time" instead of journaling. There is a movie based on this book, which I also just watched. They are different, but similar enough to get the theme across, but the movie made me cry and the book did not.

I LOVVVEEDDD THIS BOOK, veered out of my usual genres, and can I just say I am so glad I did? Adams's point of view made me understand way more about mental illness than I ever would have, it was so interesting to hear about his experiences thru letters to his therapist. A new fav for sure! 10/10 recommend.
