i know guys put the pitchforks down. i fucking love hannibal okay but this collection included some of the most poorly written essays i’ve had the displeasure of reading. aside from the occasional poor writing (and in one instance literally getting facts wrong), there seems to be a sort of bryan fuller blowjob competition, where he can do no wrong in seemingly any of these “authors” eyes. i feel this takes away from any possible critique, and makes this collection feel a little flat when i can personally think of many criticisms one could lay upon bryan. aside from these negatives, some of these essays did really get me thinking, and because of that and my hannibal bias i suppose it’s okay.

this is a gem. a collection of academic essays analysing the hannibal show through the lens of its critique on psychoanalysis, how the show's love story relates to relationship dynamics gothic literature, forensics, sociology and will and hannibal's relationship and mentorship - i've taken so much from this. it is immeasurable in value, both academical and to fuel my obsessiviness, one-man religion cult towards the show.

Great read, for any Hannibal fan!! Lots of great essays, even for someone like me who isn’t in academia and doesn’t read essays often. I enjoyed lots of different takes in the book and it fueled my rewatch of Hannibal in a new and fun way. I’m glad to add it to my Hannibal collection.

Some essays are better than others, and some will be more engaging depending on what you are interested in within the show, but overall this was fantastic. Recommend for anyone who loves the show (and other Hannibal media) and wants to read more about it’s impact on and in relation to the modern world.

Great collection of essays. Well written, well edited. The only thing that drags it down below the full five stars is the final interview, which just felt stilted and awkward, and as if nothing was actually said.

Super Informative! The essays were kind of mixed, though I still enjoyed them. A couple I found overly complicated (what are you actually saying with those big words?), and others could’ve been a little tighter to avoid straying from their own point. but overall a fantastic collection. I came to this collection for the queerness and ended up being equally (if not more) interested in the meta-essays about the show and its fandom; the role that food plays in fannibal culture or the way NBC’s Hannibal functions as a transformative work of fanfiction, for example.

Also, I love the Bedelia essay because she’s such a mysterious character and is so hard to read in canon, but nonetheless holds such an important role in the show’s mythology.

I definitely recommend this to any NBC Hannibal fan who enjoys tumblr-styled meta with a healthy dose of actual meta commentary.

Hannibal is my favorite TV show, so I had to get this book once I heard about it. If you're a huge fannibal, then this book will be for you. It's a deep analysis of so many different angles of the show. I think my favorite essays were the ones about Dolarhyde as a trans narrative, Hannibal and colonialism, and the one about Bedelia. Some of these essays are incredibly academic and dense, making them not easy reads. But they were very good and this book is one to complete any fannibal's shelf.
