This is a hard book to get through but it was well written and the characters were relatable. Being in the main character’s head was a hard-wrenching perspective to be in, but that’s what made the book so well done.

Wow. I loved this book. It's not perfect, but the way it made me feel seen made it perfect to me. Leighton was such a relatable character for me, especially when she expressed her thoughts and feelings about leaving home to go to school. I didn't live in an environment with physical violence, but I do come from a broken home and this book would have been so perfect for me to read back then. This is going onto my list of favorites for sure.

I don’t read a lot of contemporary books. It’s just not my thing. So I have to thank Mary from Fox & Wit for picking this book for March’s box.

This book is painful and important. As someone who comes from an abusive home this book was hard and yet I feel relieved. I see my story. I cried. A lot. I felt the pain of Leighton and her sisters. There’s so much I want to say and yet no amount of words can properly convey how much this book means to mean.

I would say the magical realism of the book isn't an intertwined in as something by [a:A.S. King|1651879|A.S. King|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1323437957p2/1651879.jpg] or [a:Anna-Marie McLemore|6434877|Anna-Marie McLemore|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1516319453p2/6434877.jpg], it serves more as a catalyst and deus ex machina, so I wouldn't recommend it on that alone. But the book is marvelous at showcasing the helplessness and constant fear of being in a domestic violence situation, and the agony of feeling abandoned, like other people are looking the other way.

Great YA book. I really loved the story line with the family and crows. It only felt like a YA book when it came to the love story, but I'm sure if I was an actual young adult still I would be eating that up.

“Maybe fear is the toll women pay to exist in this world at all.”

This was a very powerful debut novel about living with domestic violence, told by the oldest of three sisters who is desperate to escape a town where everyone seems content to simply look the other way because it’s not their business, it doesn’t concern them.

Big cw for domestic violence in this, obviously. It’s a tough read, but it’s a good one.
