Was it as good as Jurassic Park? No.
Did I expect it to be as good as Jurassic Park? No.
Was it well-written? Yes.
Was it fun to read? Yes.

Not the best novel ever, but I didn't expect it to be the best novel ever when I started reading it. It's a lot of fun and I enjoyed reading it over a couple of days. And it's still MUCH MUCH better than the awful film version!! No T-Rex loose in NYC!

BLUF: Try reading the first chapter. If you can get through the lecture without finding it tedious, you may enjoy this book. If you can‰ЫЄt, well, it doesn‰ЫЄt get any better from there.

I think this book...

...has few similarities with the movie.
This is actually a good thing. There is a scene or two that is similar from the movie, but that's it.

... is fine to read as a standalone.
You don‰ЫЄt need to read the first book in order to understand this book.

...is descriptive, but not about things we care about.
Lost World is filled primarily with the long-winded lectures/rambles by one of the main characters Malcolm.

... is lacking a good story line.
SpoilerYou start with the character introductions. Then it moves to a character getting lost/stuck/needing help on an island.

One story line turns into a rescue mission. The rescue mission falls apart when said character ends up not wanting to be rescued from the island. They seem to hang out a bit, in awe naturally, of what is going on around them, but don‰ЫЄt seem to care much about leaving the island.

You have another story line develop around a group of people who tracked the above character to the island, and seem interested in collecting dinosaur eggs for some reason. These characters are presumed to be the bad guys, but they don‰ЫЄt interact enough with their counterparts to really add to the story.

...is lacking normal character emotions?
There is some awe and some fear in the book, but not as much as I would expect. This may be my apathy for the book talking though.

In the span of 24 hours almost everyone dies. The book is also 99% different from the movie (and WAY better than the movie).

I cannot get this book out of my head. It was just so striking how different The Lost World was compared to screen adaption(which in my opinion was entertaining but objectively a bad movie).

I really get the feeling that Crichton understood the scientific research that was put into this novel. He really understood the scientific and academic communities as well. Chrichton included wonderful teenage characters as well as some badass female characters.

This novel was everything I wanted from the Jurassic Park series. It was terrifying, yet enthralling, and I couldn't get enough. It touched on topics of generational knowledge, feminism, and issues in academia. There were also corporate espionage and government conspiracy theories. The Lost World had such a satisfying ending as well. I will definitely be reading more of Crichton's work in the future.
