3.5 I would've given it 4 stars but the first half of the book was so boring.

The science talks in this book series are so fascinating and thought-provoking - I love it and I want more! The endless dinosaur attacks in the second half of the book were not as exciting and served little purpose other than providing some action and gore.

book malcolm never quite lives up to movie malcolm. book sarah though?????? eons better than movie sarah. my only major critique of steven spielberg maybe ever is not giving julianne the full sarah harding treatment and instead combining her character w levine.

*cue Jurassic Park Theme* The book is fun, violent and bloody. Great writing from Michael Crichton.

I am a super fan of the Jurassic Park franchise. I love all of the movies (both the old and the new, with the exception of the old JP 3). Although The Lost World movie and book are very different from each other, I enjoyed them both. Several of the detailed discussions in the book were left out of the movie and quite a few creative liberties were taken, but what's not to love about Dr. Malcom and his second meeting with dinosaurs?

Just as fun to listen to the 2nd time around. Non stop action from early on right up to the end. And an interesting read for the tidbits you pick up about botany, paleontology, biology, etc. A very entertaining read that clearly had a lot of research going into it. On a side note, I find it amusing that Ian Malcolm gets benched once the action really gets going in both JP and TLW. It's almost like Crichton likes using his character to foretell of the coming disasters, but doesn't know what to do with him after that. So he injures the character, sidelining him and shooting him full of pain killers, allows a few delirium-induced deep thoughts where appropriate, but otherwise doesn't have to work him into the story anymore. Not a problem that affects enjoying the book, just a new observation the 2nd time through the series.

A little more convoluted and a little less interesting but still tons of fun.

Surprisingly, my rating isn't so low due to the whole Ian Malcolm not being dead thing. I liked that. But why was his character neutered? It felt so forced and like he lost all the "oomph" he had in Jurassic Park.
Also the book is incredibly slow with few likeable characters, if any. The second half is super great so if you can force yourself through the first half to 2/3 the story picks up and dinosaurs start hunting and wrecking humans again which is cool.

One thing to be said is, I do enjoy how Crichton delivers his writing. This is my third book by him and I enjoy the scenery he depicts and how his messages come across, smart but not text-book. Not too scholarly where it becomes confusing.

I love dinosaurs so I still enjoyed this book, it just really felt forced and like it was trying to ride on the success of Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park is one of my favorite books, however this one was disappointing. I guess it's not fair to compare it to it's prequel, since that one was so, in my opinion, a masterpiece. The overall story was meh. The scientific talk (which I loooved in the first one) was overkill in this one - wayyy wayy to much of it, I couldn't care for it. At the halfway point, I just wanted this to be over. I was also shocked at how vastly differently this is from the movie (but now I understand why). I did really like the T-rex/Trailer scene and I'm happy to see it originated from the book. I didn't really care for the characters (even Ian who I really liked in the first one) and the use of two kids felt like a repetition of the previous one. Overall, sadly not nearly as strong or enjoyable as the first one.

Nowhere like the first one, but still good dino entertainment. Even with Malcolm's miraculous come back AND Sarah Harding is a badass - but could have done without the "she's so strong, but still a woman" comments.
