This story is extremely horny and somewhat sad.
I think the trouble many of my fellow reviewers and I had with this novel is that it was promoted as a love story and it’s just not. It’s a meditation on death and life and most of all sex, but not like, romantic sex? I don’t know. To borrow a reference from the book itself, if you were hoping for Patrick Swayze & Demi Moore, keep moving.

I hate that I didn't love this. It started off at five stars and slowly deteriorated to three or four. I love the writing, it reminds me a lot of Sally Rooney's style. The characters are so clearly lacking a fundamental aspect of humanity, and those are the kind of characters I don't necessarily latch onto and connect deeply with, but that I am most interested to learn about, and regard their thoughts with a seriousness I don't give freely. But I found myself not caring about what happens very much, and only continuing on in the second half of the book out of dedication to finishing a book I started out really liking just in case there was a little more to like. Overall an interesting book, but I probably wouldn't reread or recommend to anyone I know who isn't already into contemporaries/Sally Rooney type books. I do think Bonnaffons has a ton of potential though and I will definitely pick up her other writing.
I got through it pretty fast. Intriguing. The authors ghost sex gets you a bit horny but not enough to do anything about it. Probably a 3.6

The Regrets by Amy Bonnaffons has, in my opinion, one of the most intriguing premises, and one of the most interesting covers, of 2020, but unfortunately its execution didn't quite work for me. I mischaracterized it somewhat when I referred to it as a book where a woman falls in love with a ghost--it sort of is, but it's more accurate to say that it's the story of a young man caught between this life and this afterlife on a technicality of the rules of death, who meets and falls in love with a woman while he's living a shadow of what his former life was.
I struggled to find cohesion in this book, not just because of its shifting perspectives, but because it sets itself up to be one thing (an exploration of this specific concept of what happens when you die, and then what happens when that doesn't go according to plan) and then becomes something else (a somewhat meta and at times clicheed doomed love story with coming-of-age elements) without fully exploring the former. I love fabulism and I'm always attracted to weird premises, but I think that either the weirdness or the love story (or both!) could have been dialed up a few notches in this one. Although interesting in concept and very readable, I wished that it had either been distilled down more or expanded into a broader scope to add more interest.

I don’t know why this book matched my heart so undoubtedly. The ending was this huge surge of emotions that I finally let go of. My love life has basically been hectic and non-existent simultaneously and this book conjured up emotions I didn’t know existed.
I honestly didn’t expect the ending of this book (which was so minimalist) to make me shed a bucket load of tears.
Ghost sex was a bit weird but the premise of the story, the ending, Rachel, Thomas and Mark - all these things just made this book beyond special. I will hold it in my heart forever.

This book was part haunting ghost story, part fiction, with a side of romance, and little bit of huh??
It is focused around a very interesting concept - a clerical error sends you to limbo instead of “on”. But limbo still leaves you on earth, in your same environment, with a different body to those around you. Everyday you wait until the paperwork is fixed and you can move “on”. But, you must be careful what you do while you’re waiting, or you’ll experience Regrets.
We follow Thomas in his journey through limbo, but Thomas doesn’t heed the rules and ends up falling in love with a woman named Rachel. Thus begins a wild romance, where no one knows what will happen or when.
At first, I thought this book was starting a little slow. It almost lost my interest, but I’m so glad I pushed through! Once we meet Rachel, her and Thomas really test the limits of limbo and find the love they’ve always wanted. Their relationship is definitely strange, and the things they experience stick with both of them in a very real way. It’s interesting because it’s almost like Rachel is being haunted, but she can actually see and feel the ghost haunting her.
3.5
