The Regrets
by Amy Bonnaffons
I hate that I didn't love this. It started off at five stars and slowly deteriorated to three or four. I love the writing, it reminds me a lot of Sally Rooney's style. The characters are so clearly lacking a fundamental aspect of humanity, and those are the kind of characters I don't necessarily latch onto and connect deeply with, but that I am most interested to learn about, and regard their thoughts with a seriousness I don't give freely. But I found myself not caring about what happens very much, and only continuing on in the second half of the book out of dedication to finishing a book I started out really liking just in case there was a little more to like. Overall an interesting book, but I probably wouldn't reread or recommend to anyone I know who isn't already into contemporaries/Sally Rooney type books. I do think Bonnaffons has a ton of potential though and I will definitely pick up her other writing.
