An enjoyable read, good art, I am not a fan of using kids as soldiers or sacrifices even if the adults think it's the only way to save the world.

The fault of this storyline lies not with Bendis but the damage Ultimatum had on the universe as a whole and how it still affects any potential event even now. He works with what he has, and for what it is, it does play.

I only read the main story line, the Ultimate Comics Spider-Man side arc, and Survive. I think this event seemed rushed through the main arc and the side arc material didn't add to the depth of the story. Overall the art was great and I enjoyed the large scale two page spreads but the story seemed sudden. I enjoyed reading it but for a major even to cap of the ultimate universe I was a little underwhelmed.

This was surprisingly good. It was both a good Marvel Space book as well as a good Ultimates book - neither of which I expect much from. It had Galactus in it and wasn't horrible. Sure it contained a horribly weak Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos story - with a whole dumb nano religious plot that was just plain annoying. And clearly the writers could have done a whole lot better with Kitty Pryde - it's like they understand a little of her powers but almost nothing of her character. But the rest of the book was a good mixture of plot and characterization. Cloak and Dagger were used well, and I'd like to see more of Bombshell. The surviving X-Men from Utopia were actually pretty good. Was this a great book? No. But not bad. 3.5 of 5.

An enjoyably daffy and grand collection of stories, all centering around the Earth-destroying event "Cataclysm" which sees original Marvel character Galactus come to the Ultimate Universe intent on eating Earth(-1610).

My favorite was the precursor to "Cataclysm", "Hunger", the good-natured origin story of Rick Jones as the Ultimate Captain Marvel and his team-up with floaty dolt Silver Surfer. The Ultimates' tie-in arc was quite a rollercoaster ride through a Miraclemanesque destroyed Belarus as Fury's Howling Commandos fought mad high priest MODOK and his plans to become the new herald. The constant unrelenting action on such a grand scale made it almost dizzying to read -- but in a good way.

I will say, however, that the main event series is SO busy that I was actually unaware that Captain America had fucking DIED by the end, with Tony Stark delivering a tearful eulogy. So too with the Punisher, though at least Fury mentions "Frank didn't make it" during the action itself.

Oh, and hey, here is a blight on "Hunger", my favorite of the arcs. A fed up Rick Jones returns to Queens from deeep spaaace, unwilling to take the Watcher's orders anymore, and just after a good ole cheeseburger. But lo! He sees the memorial of his old neighbor over the way Peter Parker. Whoa what happened? A hot redheaded girl in glasses* whose tank top says PUNK says "he died a hero... what have you been up to, Rick Jones?" and perhaps Rick he is... he is INSPIRED by this punk mermaid... milady... to DO THE RIGHT THING

A foul instance of insidious misogyny in an otherwise crackin' and poppin' miniseries!

*lol MJ and Gwen are both punk or goth depending on what gets the artist going at any given point

So, I did not love all these stories equally, but that's no surprise. This book combines several different comics with different writers and artists, so the styles are pretty varied.

You can pretty much read this in any order if you start with "Hunger" and "Cataclysm 0.1" and then end with "Survive!" In fact, if you're only interested in seeing how your favorite characters get through this particular crisis, feel free to just start with the first two, pick and choose from the ones in the middle, and then cap the whole thing off with "Survive!"

If you're a completionist, here's my recommendation:
Hunger
Cataclysym 0.1
Cataclysm: The Ultimates
Cataclysm: Ultimate X-Men
Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man
Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand
Survive!

Note: I only read the main story and the Ultimate Spider-Man tie-in.

The Ultimate universe's track record for huge events continues to suck.

A majority of the action that takes place in this book is simply explosion after explosion, with no emotional resonance at all. The action takes up so much page space that when the final battle does happen in the last issue, it moves too quickly, with no pauses to take in the enormity of what is happening. Unfortunately, that means the sacrifices made have no resonance whatsoever.
SpoilerWhy should I care that Thor is stuck in the negative zone? Kitty Pryde got saved, woohoo? I completely missed Captain America's death in the messy art, and was confused as to why Storm was holding his shield at the end.

So, you know, it's Ultimatum all over again, but at least the Ultimate Spider-Man tie-in for this was much, much better.

Marvel needs to realize that Miles Morales and the Ultimate Teens are the only good thing going in this universe and drop everything else.
