Wonderful book! Great story,terrific writing.
While searching for it in the library, after realizing she was married to Tony Horwitz, my mother informed me that they recently purchased the home across the road from my parents place..small world!

On the fence about this one. Nearly ditched it but then really enjoyed the second half. Let’s call it 3 stars.

Characters were not fully developed as actualized individual voices - hard to distinguish two main characters voices from each other. The MMC's voice was overly modernized and feminine.

This book fills in the information for the absent father from "Little Women". The story is mostly told from the father's view point during his time serving in the Civil War as well as his earlier experiences that shaped his life. Geraldine Brooks based Peter March on Alcott's own father changing some details to fit the story as needed. It is a well written book and very interesting to read.
Hmm. I loved aspects of this book. In addition to abolition, slavery, the horrors of war, it was also a deep dive into marriage and the two sides to a single story or instance. I loved the author's approach with the narration, but the book ended and I wanted more. The intimate look at the characters and the exposed and realistic flaws of the main characters were incredibly well done. All in all, a great read, and a great addition to the Little Women story.

I've just finished this book & I don't know how I feel about it. I learned new things--ex: there were Yankee-run farms where 'contraband' grew cotton for the Union cause--but the narrator, Captain March, irritated me even when I admired him. I'm torn between empathizing with March and wanted to shake him vigorously by the lapels. His principles are all well and good but he hardly seems aware of nuance, compromise or practicality (in that regard, he'd fit in well as a member of America's bitterly divided House of Representatives). He's so busy tripping over his white male privilege, noble intentions and remorse that he can't function.
Through March Geraldine Brooks offered interesting insights about the challenges of abolitionist fervor when confronted with reality. The very violence of my opinion about March would indicate that the character is well-drawn but, though I am glad to have read this novel, I doubt I shall think about it after this moment.
