Little Women fans beware: Brooks will knock Mr. March off his pedestal. He may not be the sainted patriarch after all. Brooks paints a disturbingly realistic picture of slavery and the Civil War. This book is not for the faint of heart.

This book has the best of all things literary: fiction, reference to other fiction, reference to biography, reference to history, and a story that is just so good. What amazing characters. How I wish I could know Grace Clements. How I respect Marmee in new and wondrous ways! And, wow -- my sense of the Civil War has just expanded in new and horrible ways. So much to learn. This books makes me want more -- of myself, of books, of the world. What a gift!
