March

I really love Brooks's style and I only give this 4 instead of 5 because it took me 3 times to finish it. It starts rather slowly.

I loved the way Mr. March had an actual personality in this book ( I always felt he needed a bit more time in Little Women). I also loved how Mrs. March was portrayed. Little Women hints that Mrs. March has a bit of trouble keeping her temper in check, and I thought the author handled it well, without taking it too far.

Good -- I was first interested by an article the author wrote for The New Yorker - it's a retelling of Little Women from the father's perspective -- and as Alcott's father was rather a piece of work...! O

The story was compelling but Mr. March’s humanity and frailties made me not fully enjoy this book. I wanted him to be the wholesome character we barely know from Little Women. Instead, he is a fully 3-dimensional character with faults and a few betrayals that were hard to read albeit true to the realities of the civil war.
Warning: if you wish to have the March family remain as presented by LMAlcott, skip this “fan fiction”.

I felt this book was a good synopsis of the complexities of war. Even in a war that is 'justified', horrible things happen. The author addresses murky issues and the inner motivations of what drives us in our relationships and in our actions. A little hard to get into but once you are into it, hard to put down. Some of the details are gruesome....but it is war.

Favorite Quotes:

For to know a man’s library is, in some measure, to know his mind.

If there is one class of person I never quite trusted, it is a man who knows no doubt.

I did note this, and set it down as yet one more of life’s injustices: that the man who has been wealthy is dunned more civilly than the fellow who has never been poor.”

My objective was to awaken their hearts to the ideas dormant there, rather than to implant facts into their memory.
