A very short and sweet read containing four stories. The Mistletoe Murder, A Very Commonplace Murder, The Boxdale Murder and The Twelve Clues of Christmas.

Not a bad collection. I did enjoy them and they were all different. Not the best but I have read worse. It is also my first time reading PD James and I would like to read more of her works.

A solid 3/5 but more like a 3.5

I enjoyed this set of stories. It was a nice escape and change of pace from my current readings. I enjoyed the narration for the audio version.

A retro style set of murder mysteries. Interesting but not really compelling. Characters are all of the same social class, and it feels like a game of clue. A bunch of rich people in the room, a dead body, and we have to figure out who, what, when and why.

Despite the murder aspect these 4 stories make for a rather cozy holiday read. Unfortunately, I liked each story a little less than the previous one (maybe because I had some trouble keeping all the names apart), so the first one ended up being my favorite. The others had some good twists as well but especially the last one laid it on a bit thick with the meta references and everything was concluded too quickly. Nevertheless, I’d like to read more from P.D. James.

I’m a little bummed this was my first introduction to P.D.
James. The Mistletoe Murder was cozy, had an interesting point of view, and a nice twist at the end. Would have given it 3.5 if it had been the only one..

But the other three were disappointing. The Boxdale Inheritance feels like a complete rip off of Christie and The Twelve Clues of Christmas was not clever at all. The solution to A Very Commonplace Murder was so obvious it was painful, and frankly, the tale was a little disgusting. Wondering if other James’ stories are better?
