This one really hit me in the feels and I cried multiple times. It deals with abandonment and bullying and the fear of letting people in when you’ve been hurt before. The main character Quicksilver has been through a lot but finds a bond with a dog who she names Fox but after finding out that not everything is as it seems she runs into someone who will change her life in an unusual way. Her bond with Fox is so heartwarming and his quick wit and cheekiness is great comic relief. There is a time travel element to this that I did not see coming that really piqued my interest. The idea and story was novel and kept my interest even when it was a bit creepy. Quicksilver can be hard to love (but I feel that too) and has a hard exterior but she has been through a lot and just needs to find the right people to help her remember that it’s okay to depend on others and work together. Lots to love in this one and I’m looking forward to reading more by the author in the future.

I didn't care for this as much as I thought I might (or usually do, with this sort of book). I'm even particularly a fan of fantasy thief books, it seems (The Thief was great, The Magic Thief terrific, and Lies of Locke Lamora wonderful!), but this particular thief fantasy, nope.

I was moved a couple of times, which is great--bonus points for that--but the plot was draggy and meandering, I personally am irked when pets turn into persons you can chat with (because you gain a friend but lose a pet!), so that bugged, the main character wasn't especially likable and her sidekick/love interest whiny and undeveloped, the main plot premise was confusing (something about witches, but 1st witches, and their 1st monsters, and they took over a body of a boy, but also those of wolves, while still being dead, with skeletons around, and the skeletons behaved erratically in a way that didn't make sense given the plot, so far as I could tell, given how confusing it was).

So I'm giving this series a pass.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s).

I don't read a lot of middle grades/children's books because the pace/the details/the world building is usually a lot less compared to adult books. For a 400+ page book there was surprisingly less substance in the book. A lot happened in a chapter or two and then it became very sluggish. All in all, it was a good concept but lacked a lot of strong characters.
Spoiler Having Anastazia and Quicksliver as strong characters a bit cheating as they were both the same person, IMO.

More than a kids book

This was a fun and sometimes confusing story about a girl witch who goes on a great adventure. I did not expect to get so emotionally attached! While it didn't have an entirely happy ending, it was a good one

Not a spoiler, but don't trust the blurb: there's very little "sleeping on rooftops" going on here. Instead this is a good middle grade adventure story, with some magic mixed in (plus libraries!). Quicksilver's faithful dog, newfound friends and allies and the world in which they live is going to appeal to readers; that there's more to come will make them happy.
