Voidwalker immediately captured my attention with the vibrant and gorgeous cover, and I’m so glad I started reading it. This book had me feeling everything from cackling to intense hurt, which for me, the best books are those that make you feel something. I also really enjoyed the relationship development between Fi and Lord Antal. They had some really great banter throughout the story. The chemistry between them was intense and easy to feel coming off the pages. I also loved the world building MacLean created along with the really unique magic system.  I’m excited to explore more of it in future books in the series. The audiobook narration for this was enjoyable. Hugh did a great job bringing emotional depth to the story. The narration was also easy to follow which allowed me to stay fully immersed in the story. Overall, this book was highly enjoyable, and I’d recommend checking it out.

FIVE STARS ISN’T ENOUGH I NEED TO SCREAM
This book yanked me out of a depressing reading slump and dragged me straight into monster-loving heaven. Me & monster romance 🤞 I was not prepared for the grip this book was going to have on me it was insane. Giggling & kicking my feet over words on a page insane. Oh & he has a tail. A TAIL that wraps around her🧎‍♀️he can devour me anytime I'll be a willing sacrifice
Just add it to your tbr or better yet read it please
Okay enough about the monster part of it.

The main character Fionamara? I loved her.
It was so refreshing to have an older FMC who actually acts her age mature, self-aware, and not written like a child even tho she's supposed to be older. Her inner monologue had me laughing out loud more than once she was hilarious.
The magic system was insanely cool and felt super unique. This book didn't world info dump on you either which I really liked. The banter between the two main characters? Perfection. Their relationship development actually made sense it wasn't insta lust she was disgusted by this monster until she wasn't. You're going to love when she realizes that
Thankfully there isn't a cliffhanger on this book I saw that it was going to be a duology but honestly it reads like a standalone

Thank you to Orbit Books and NetGalley for the ARC!

4.5/5 Stars

Voidwalker provides a unique world with interesting creatures and an energy system that keeps things interesting. Fi and Antal are both complex characters that experience deep growth both separately and together. I do wish we got a little more of the world building and to see a little more of Fi's past fleshed out. There are a few loose ends and questions I'm left with after reading, but they only serve to make me eager for book 2. Especially with the tease in the epilogue of what's to come.

I was interested immediately and captured by the writing style that really portrayed Fi's feisty inner monologue. As the plot picked up, I was entirely hooked. I'm not usually a monster romance girlie but this felt tame enough that I was engrossed the entire time.

Overall, this was a fun read that had me excited to keep reading at every moment. I love a strong, queer, female MC and Fi absolutely delivers on all fronts.

This was a fun enemies to lovers romantasy! The MMC is a monster overlord who has to eat humans to survive and the FMC is a smuggler who gets tangled up in a dangerous plot, so things are going great!

I loved a lot about this book:
  • Nice worldbuilding
  • Interesting magic system
  • So much tension and banter between the two main characters
  • Slow-ish burn
  • bi4bi!
  • Main character is in her thirties
  • A pathetic wet cat of MMC who would rather take bubble baths and sleep in the rafters than do any of his overlordly duties

I did have some things I didn’t particularly like, such as overly reprieve phrases, and I feel the story dragged a little at the midpoint mark, however I’m still rating this as 4 stars because I had a GREAT time with this book. I love the characters and I thought the magic system was very cool.

I am looking forward to the second book because I’m really excited to see where the story goes next for these two.

What a fun book. As someone who usually gravitates more towards fantasy with a romantic subplot, and this being my first monster romance, this story was a pleasant surprise.
I absolutely fell in love with the main romantic leads and their relationship. The trust-building and slow opening-up to each other was so well done. Their banter and flirting—loved it. Honestly, I didn’t expect them to be so cute together. The following spicy scenes felt well-earned and further deepened their connection.
Was the narrative a bit too heavy-handed in making sure we got that the love interest is actually a misunderstood good guy, not like the others of his man-eating kind? Yeah. Did that stop me from loving him anyway? Nope. He’s been frequently compared to a brooding house cat, and yeah, he kinda is lol and not that useful in a fight. He’s making up for it by being a supportive and attentive lover, though. I found his sulking quite adorable. His hanging out in the rafters of her house instead of sleeping on a couch and his mood-expressing tail had me quite amused as well.
Fi is a fun female lead. I did question her intelligence in the beginning. I mean, what did she think would happen when she was hired to smuggle a bomb into an important political building? I could understand why she went along with it, considering what we learn about her past and how it still affects her. But why was she so surprised about it? Despite that, I enjoyed her character journey and her snark. She has her badass moments and tries to make up for her reckless behaviour, and I appreciate that. Also, yes to a 32-year-old main female character.
It's so heart-warming to see these lonely, hurting two characters connect and also open up to others around them along the way as well as trying to overcome their fears and trauma, and just trying to do the right thing. They are both in desperate need of friends.
I also adored Fi’s relationship with her brother, so heart-warming, and the complexity of the one she shares with someone from her past whom she meets again.
I preferred the romance plotline over the revolution one. The latter was fine, just not as interesting to me and maybe also a bit generic.
The world-building was pretty interesting. There were some things where I questioned whether they made sense, and some of the magic based on energy was a bit hard for me to imagine. We spend more time in that little village or in Fi’s cabin a bit further away from it, so what we actually get to see of the world is limited. Overall, it was pretty decent, though, and served the story well. The somewhat forced cohabitation was nice for our two lovelies to spend more time together, hehe.
The writing was okay despite the repetitive phrases, descriptions, and explanations that could have been cut, where some variety in wording would have been better, or where the reader could have been trusted more. It didn’t take away much from my enjoyment, though.
This book seems to be part of a series, but it wraps up nicely and reads well as a standalone.
If a man-eating love interest with antlers, a tail, claws, and fangs doesn’t put you off, I can highly recommend this story for the romance and the character journeys of the main (romantic) leads.
