Voidwalker

What a fun book. As someone who usually gravitates more towards fantasy with a romantic subplot, and this being my first monster romance, this story was a pleasant surprise.
I absolutely fell in love with the main romantic leads and their relationship. The trust-building and slow opening-up to each other was so well done. Their banter and flirting—loved it. Honestly, I didn’t expect them to be so cute together. The following spicy scenes felt well-earned and further deepened their connection.
Was the narrative a bit too heavy-handed in making sure we got that the love interest is actually a misunderstood good guy, not like the others of his man-eating kind? Yeah. Did that stop me from loving him anyway? Nope. He’s been frequently compared to a brooding house cat, and yeah, he kinda is lol and not that useful in a fight. He’s making up for it by being a supportive and attentive lover, though. I found his sulking quite adorable. His hanging out in the rafters of her house instead of sleeping on a couch and his mood-expressing tail had me quite amused as well.
Fi is a fun female lead. I did question her intelligence in the beginning. I mean, what did she think would happen when she was hired to smuggle a bomb into an important political building? I could understand why she went along with it, considering what we learn about her past and how it still affects her. But why was she so surprised about it? Despite that, I enjoyed her character journey and her snark. She has her badass moments and tries to make up for her reckless behaviour, and I appreciate that. Also, yes to a 32-year-old main female character.
It's so heart-warming to see these lonely, hurting two characters connect and also open up to others around them along the way as well as trying to overcome their fears and trauma, and just trying to do the right thing. They are both in desperate need of friends.
I also adored Fi’s relationship with her brother, so heart-warming, and the complexity of the one she shares with someone from her past whom she meets again.
I preferred the romance plotline over the revolution one. The latter was fine, just not as interesting to me and maybe also a bit generic.
The world-building was pretty interesting. There were some things where I questioned whether they made sense, and some of the magic based on energy was a bit hard for me to imagine. We spend more time in that little village or in Fi’s cabin a bit further away from it, so what we actually get to see of the world is limited. Overall, it was pretty decent, though, and served the story well. The somewhat forced cohabitation was nice for our two lovelies to spend more time together, hehe.
The writing was okay despite the repetitive phrases, descriptions, and explanations that could have been cut, where some variety in wording would have been better, or where the reader could have been trusted more. It didn’t take away much from my enjoyment, though.
This book seems to be part of a series, but it wraps up nicely and reads well as a standalone.
If a man-eating love interest with antlers, a tail, claws, and fangs doesn’t put you off, I can highly recommend this story for the romance and the character journeys of the main (romantic) leads.
