This was a fantastic ending to the Disillusionists Trilogy. I stayed up late two nights to read it, which I haven't done in a long time. This whole trilogy is really good, but this ending was definitely the best of the three. The trilogy just got better as it went along. I highly recommend it.

Weeks since last free of body guards Otto has assigned to "protect" her, Justine is with Simon eluding her protectors and looking for her car. Justine only has two Disillusionist friends left, Simon (hard to believe) and Shelby, as the others have all left on their own missions and a few left with Packard... after what Packard did (at end of Double Cross). Justine has a full life; along with not zinging in sixty-two days and counting, she's going to nursing school, doing Mid-city things with Otto, and planning her wedding. Although she has a feeling the world ended the day of the shooting, but she is doing her best to carry on... until things start to come to her attention.

I listened to this book as I couldn't wait for it to come into print, and I will purchase the print version as well to complete my set here. I'm not much of a book listener, and this was my first experience. I do think I prefer to read as I get to reread sections as I want when I like them or feel there is more to the words than first interpreted. But the narrator did a very fine job with the characters. She had different voices for the characters, some of which I would never have hear like she did but they worked.

The starts of this book gives us a reminder of Justine as we first found her in Mind Games, the hypochondriac version of Justine. It was so different seeing her this way after evolving with her in Double Cross, but was wonderful in tying the books together and a reminder where we started before the bang of an ending here. As Justine is one to have things come at her timing, things do surface and Justine returns to the Justine we all remember so fondly and loved in Double Cross. But in the end Justine evolves even further! Amazing! I loved that.

The characters, we get a full cast here again as we easy back into the world. We get our Simon, lol Simon. He makes me laugh with his clothing selections and his desire to make Justine do things she doesn't want to do - always a bet for him to make, even if it's with himself. We see Shelby, who is still hurting. But we get to meet Justine's dad in this book as well! I LOVE her dad. He fits the need we have to know Justine's history and sooo makes the book in the last half. He really is a great person, even with his own phobia. Oh, did I not mention Otto and... Packard? Well, they are here too. But I'm not mentioning them as I might give something away I don't want to. ;) I will say... it seems to Justine all her friends and lover have secrets they are keeping and working on, without Justine.

The world in Midcity is still a mess. We have the cannibal sleepwalkers controlled by the dream invader then there are copy cat murders showing up, ones copying the murders of the highcaps Otto has put away. The streets are dangerous and there is a curfew put into affect by Otto. We do get to spend some time in the Tangle, which I find interesting since reading the short story in Wild & Steamy. I love this tangled mess as it seems a world all its own.

This book was wonderfully done and I'm so grateful Carolyn found someone to print it. It's the conclusion to her Disillusionist trilogy and one that ties all together wonderfully.

3.5 stars I think. I didn't enjoy it as much as the others. Otto wasnt a convincing enough bad guy for me I just didn't believe it.

I am so weird, I wanted patiently for the print to come out. Even though book 2 was this biggest OMG! No you didn't!!!!! of last year. And what do I do when the print is out...much much later. Yes I buy an ebook *groans, I am an idiot*. But to my defense I could not read ebooks before and now the library has an e-reader. Still idiot here.

But at last I read it and I was on the edge of my seat all way through. Justine thinks Packard killed Avery. She does not know Otto had Sophia change her memories and now Justine and Otto are getting married! Noooooo!

Still I do not hate Otto because in the end everyone is out of their mind in this series. Justine thinks she could die any moment. Otto is..well insane and powerhungry but but, he loves her! I just can't hate him.

And Justine, she has doubts but she loves him..or? I kept wanting her to remember what she shared with Packard. Still it is weird that I still like Otto more but still want her to be with Packard? Yes that is how loopy you get from this crazy book.

What a ride! Thrilling! Filled with crazies and just a great ending to this series.

Finally, my happy end! And enough romance too!

SpoilerIt made me happy to see that I wasn't wrong about Shelby and that Carolyn Crane didn't suddenly change one of the most important characters in the story. ( For me at least, Shelby was important. I loved her hopelessness) And I also loved that Simon got a bigger part this time, showing that he's actually a good guy under all that muscle, tattoos and and otherwise unappealing sense of fashion.

Overall, I was finally happy with the work. As always I've been proven that a trilogy can't be seen in the individual books but always in the larger picture - it doesn't really make sense otherwise, leaving too many question marks, too many cliffhangers - and I appreciate that because I can only imagine how hard it can be for an author to maintain the same feel throughout what must be thousands of pages (counting manuscripts and drafts). The characters, the world... they're all so palpable and endearing that I feel sad to let them go...

But, yeah, I'm a happy camper, with her happy ending and all that's needed to make me perfectly content for yet another day in my pre-exam mania.

A satisfying end to this trilogy. I hope Ms. Crane writes more novels in this universe that center on the other characters.

Head Rush
3 Stars

Continuing where Double Cross left off, Justine Jones is preparing for her wedding to Mayor Otto Sanchez and trying to ignore the feelings and clues that something is dreadfully wrong. Her friends and her fiancé appear to be keeping secrets and the city is under martial law due to rampaging sleepwalking cannibals and a rash of crimes that are eerily reminiscent of previous High Cap attacks. Adding to all this is Packard, now a fugitive wanted for murder, who insists that he is innocent despite Justine’s memories. Not knowing who to trust, least of all herself, can Justine unravel the mystery before it is too late?

Although the ending is ultimately satisfying, the journey toward the resolution is rather tedious and predictable.

Unlike the previous installments in which the Disillusionists and their activities are front and center, this book focuses on the mystery of Avery’s death. Unfortunately, as the reader is well aware of the guilty party, Justine’s bumbling about until the stumbles across the truth is both boring and annoying.

The romantic aspects are also problematic as Justine’s intimate moments with Otto are exceedingly icky given what we know about him. Thankfully, Justine comes to her senses sooner rather than later and her romance with Packard kicks into gear, which manages to compensate for the slimy Otto to a certain extent. Speaking of Packard, one cannot help feeling for the poor man -
Spoilerit is heartbreaking watching him hope that Justine will remember even a little about the day they spent together
.

The second half of the book and the ending are better and Otto thankfully gets his just desserts. I would have been exceedingly irritated if he
Spoilerhad been Disillusioned or redeemed

All in all, a fun series although books #1 and #2 are better than #3.

this one took me a lot longer to see through to the end, probably because i was dragging on how the outcome would be. but a nice close to the series.

(oddly enough i remember thinking fawna and simon would work out really well together what with their completely off the deep end opposite kind of crazy and what do you know, there is an epilogue concerning that.)

Wow...
What a journey!
It's been a while since I've been so evolved in a series, and I've missed it!
There's something about this trilogy that was just so all encompassing! I found myself thinking about the characters and what was going to happen next while ever I wasn't reading... And had to stop myself from referring to them as real people in general conversation!

Some people may think that's sad... But people like me will understand!

The story itself was original and intriguing in every sense of the word, I fell a little bit in love with Packard and felt like Justin's journey was my own.
There was a few little plot twists and although I predicted a couple of them it was delectable to read.
It was well written and an absolute struggle to put down!

Loved loved loved it!! It deserves more than 5 stars!
