I wanted to like it.. Asian characters but I couldn’t get over the giggling. I couldn’t get into the story.

Somewhere between 3 and 3.5, I loved the Toronto food descriptions, and I generally enjoy Jackie Lau's work.

mf - CR - Asian hero - fish out of water - neighbors - grumpy/sunshine - 4 stars - this was practically food porn! I loved reading about the food scene in Toronto and it made me really crave a lot of Asian foods that I can’t get here. ☹️ Also some very hot toy scenes. My only criticism is that the writing isn’t amazing, it reads like YA almost.

Jackie Lau books don't always click for me, but this was an absolute delight - a romance between two people that felt very real, with plenty of dating (I love romance novel dating, there is not enough of it between hijinks in so many romcoms!) and amazing Toronto food descriptions.

DNF at 50%. There was no connection between any of the characters. I learn way too much about everything Amy ate without really getting to know much about it. It was like a list of things she tried every day which was...not really helpful for the story. I love food in my books, but not like this. Then the no connection between any of the characters and yeah it was not my favorite. That and Amy's conversations had so many exclamation marks! Everything she said! Yes! I do like that. So I kept reading it like she was yelling everything...I know I type with a lot of exclamation marks, a bad habit from an old job where if you didn't put them in it was like you were upset or something, but I am not used to it in my books. And Amy felt super young to me. She grew up in a small town so I could understand the naivety, but...I don't know. To me, she acted like she was 12 and that is not what I want in my adult romance...especially when she starts making out with her neighbor. So overall not the book for me.

This book was cute, but not great. I liked the mc’s well enough, but neither really grabbed me, and especially not together.

I did like when Amy gave her family a big chunk of her mind to set them straight and her mom really won the day there too. I also liked that Amy and Victor were older (not 20s) and had some life experience.

I love Jackie Lau’s food descriptions and Amy’s enthusiasm about her new city and what it offers. And I adored A and V’s kissing sessions—so cute and sweet. Unfortunately their relationship and connection wasn’t developed enough on page. I enjoyed the supporting characters and the friendships a lot.

A quiet, low conflict romance.

This was fine but not really anything particularly groundbreaking. I think the food featured in the story had more personality than most of the characters. Still a fairly sweet story about a woman moving to a new city, hooking up with a good guy, and things generally working out for her. Nothing wrong with any of that.
