I LOVED this book! So fun and surreal and sweet—definitely one of the more unique picture books I've picked up recently, which is always a plus for me!

What a sweet and tender story, beautiful illustrations, LOTS of levels of discussion available here (family changes, compassion, imagination, literal vs figurative, metaphor...), as well as cute visual humor.

I really enjoyed this book. The story is about how a grandfather comes to live with his family in the city and realizes he can no longer fish. The grandfather turns sad being unable to fish so the granddaughter has a plan to pretend fish over their balcony. About family, bonding, and imagination. Would make a great read aloud for elementary children.

This is a quirky story that I personally enjoyed. A grandpa sells his house by a lake, where he’s spent his life fishing, to move in with his granddaughter (and her parents, though they’re nowhere in the story) in her apartment in the city. Nowhere to fish, so grandpa is sad. His granddaughter tries to cheer him up, and eventually they fish off the balcony.

Now, here’s where the story got interesting as I read it to students: they were convinced as the story progressed that they were actually catching fish, that the city was getting covered with water, that a whale would come down the street any moment....these are kindergarteners and first graders. The second graders were a bit better, but still were predicting that they’d catch sharks and whales. Honestly, it was entertaining and speaks to developmental psych and how these kids perceive reality.

I enjoyed the surrealism of this story. Grandpa comes to live with his granddaughter from the woods to the big city. He lives to fish. He is getting depressed. His granddaughter figures out how to make him feel better. They play a game of pretend fishing in the city.

I love the fish they are catching and the way the let their imagination fly with all the city fish they can catch. This is a super fun read with amazing art and graphics.

My nephew enjoyed this story and he had to have this book again before he went to sleep, so I read him one more.

Beautiful book. Illustrations by Bernatene are bright, playful. Language is perfect for storytime reading, humorous tinges ( "Troublefish!") appreciated. Great for pointing and finding.

Highly recommended.
