Skyfishing: (a Grand Tale with Grandpa) by Gideon Sterer

5.0

This is a quirky story that I personally enjoyed. A grandpa sells his house by a lake, where he’s spent his life fishing, to move in with his granddaughter (and her parents, though they’re nowhere in the story) in her apartment in the city. Nowhere to fish, so grandpa is sad. His granddaughter tries to cheer him up, and eventually they fish off the balcony.

Now, here’s where the story got interesting as I read it to students: they were convinced as the story progressed that they were actually catching fish, that the city was getting covered with water, that a whale would come down the street any moment....these are kindergarteners and first graders. The second graders were a bit better, but still were predicting that they’d catch sharks and whales. Honestly, it was entertaining and speaks to developmental psych and how these kids perceive reality.
