All I kept thinking through this novella (and the four others in the series I read afterward) was that [a:T. Kingfisher|7367300|T. Kingfisher|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1547408383p2/7367300.jpg] does it better. Why do we have to have the funny, earthy, wise and mischevious older women wrapped up in a young man's head rather than just out in the world themselves?

I don't think this story is quite as good as the full novels released before it, but it is still a fun read.

'Penric's Demon' by Lois McMaster Bujold is a novella set in her World of the Five Gods series. She is a prolific writer and I have always loved the tone of her stories. This is no different.
Young Lord Penric is on his way to become engaged when he happens upon an accident. As an outcome of the accident, he finds himself by a Temple divine and a series of hosts that she has had previously. He has no experience with being this sort of host and he finds the series of women who now live in his body to be strange, but they find Penric charming. He finds himself the target of people who want the demon removed from him and transferred somewhere else. Will his wits, and the help of his new internal friends, be enough to keep him alive?
There is adventure and humor and everything else I love in Bujold's writing. I'm more familiar with her space opera series, but she is a capable fantasy writer as well. I found Penric a bumbling protagonist caught in a situation that is over his head, but able to improvise his way through the situation. The charm of Bujold's characters are the way they triumph in spite of their flaws.

I've been wanting to read [a:Lois McMaster Bujold|16094|Lois McMaster Bujold|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1623465132p2/16094.jpg]'s books for some time now, and I decided to start with the Penric and Desdemona series. I am really glad I did, because now I am ready for her Vorkosigan Saga.
08/08/22: I re-read this again after reading several books in the Vorkosigan Saga, and I enjoyed it just as much this second time.

This didn't feel so much like a full book as an installment in a much longer story (which from what I gather it is). It's a dense fantasy world and so not what I know from Bujold's space opera series but I recognize the warmth and the intelligence and the centering of "human" (more in the sense of beings than human TBH) value. Going right on to the next one.
