Penric's Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold

All I kept thinking through this novella (and the four others in the series I read afterward) was that [a:T. Kingfisher|7367300|T. Why do we have to have the funny, earthy, wise and mischevious older women wrapped up in a young man's head rather than just out in the world themselves?
