The Creative Act: A Way of Being is not just a guide to creativity; it’s a philosophical exploration of what it means to create, connect, and express oneself. The book shares deep insights on the elusive nature of creativity, encouraging readers to adopt a mindset that transcends traditional boundaries.
One of the standout aspects of this book is how it blurs the lines between the practical and the spiritual aspects of creativity. The reflections are almost meditative, making you rethink not only your creative processes but your entire approach to life. What I particularly appreciated is how it emphasizes that creativity is not reserved for artists or musicians—it’s a way of being that applies to everyone, in any field.
While the approach is deeply philosophical, the writing remains accessible. The book is full of short chapters that each explore a specific aspect of creativity, making it easy to digest, reflect upon, and apply. Whether you’re an artist, an entrepreneur, or someone simply trying to live more authentically, The Creative Act offers something for everyone.

I listened to the audiobook, which is read by Rick himself. It’s basically listening to Rick vamp on the creative process which I can’t imagine you’d really want anything else from this project. A comforting listen

Hokey-pokey dribble. The author didn't get their appendix removed because they randomly flipped to a page in a book and it said 'don't get your appendix removed' and they share this anecdote as if it is profound and proof of a greater power.
I’ve always liked Rick Rubin as a kind of guy, existing in this pretty unique niche of producer/guru/almost-billionaire beatnik, and this book is almost exactly what I would’ve expected from him. That being said, as someone who doesn’t do any kind of art full time there’s not much to take away from it, and it becomes less charming than hearing him wax poetic in an interview.
Recommend if you’re artistically engaged, otherwise rather whimsical for nonfiction.

Rick Rubin has a soothing voice. So the audiobook is pleasant. However, while there were some nuggets of wisdom in it that were reframed in a way so it felt new, the great majority of the book felt like recycled wisdom. There is nothing new under the sun one may say, but this book didn’t feel like it was contemplating the world’s wisdom is intriguing or inventive ways. To me, at least.
