I love Rick Rubin as an audio person myself, and in general I think he's p cool, but I think I like his work/influence the best because I've known that he's a 'guru'-esque personality now and that's fine, but I should've remembered that before spending 32 bucks on the hardback. If I had known this was gonna be mainly common sense instagram quote pages mixed in with nuggets of wisdom that are delivered in a guru way, I would've bought a paperback if possible.
The book is good and he is a wise dude, and I'd recommend any artist (current or desiring) to give a read at least once. I found a lot that resonated with me, but I could do without the instagram quote format for "revelations" or "affirmations."
so great, but not the best it could be for me. Will be coming back for nuggets I found helpful, just wish I had bought a cheaper format..

A short and sweet little audiobook that left me feeling inspired, hopeful, proud of what I’ve created in my life and excited for what will come next.

repetitive but kinda needed to break through the clutter of modern minds. Def helped remind and empower me to make more of the creative choices that uplift me, and to create more period
yes, it certainly reads as pretentious watered down buddhist prescriptions that would’ve excited high school me the same way e e cummings did. but e e cummings is wonderful all the same, and the musings in this book are no less poignant or helpful.

Some parts of this really hit me. Others felt like they kept draggin on and on. And I think that is also the point of this book, you take what helps you in the moment. Keep coming back to this at different times and it will show you something new. This reminded me of TIR a lot and I appreciated that.
I think this moment in time might not have been the best time for me to read this book, I am probably gonna try it again later when I am more in the mood for something deeper and to think more about the concepts.

There are some interesting ideas and a few memorable quotes peppered throughout the book. I appreciate Rick Rubin avoiding the celebrity-name-drop-as-credentials and instead focus on the frame of "everyone can engage with creativity and it will probably look different for each person."
Otherwise I felt the book was trying way to hard to *seem* deep and at times just outright off the rails. The anecdote about ignoring your doctor because the universe directed you to read a book from a best-selling grifter does not give off, "This is a person I can trust for quality advice" vibes.
I don't think that reading it was a waste of my time because it's a fairly quick read. But I certainly think this one did not at all live up to the "completely changed my life" hype it has been getting.

I found some of the information to be slightly redundant, in that many points were repeated several times when it probably could have been presented more concisely, however said information I found to be extremely valuable and I’m super excited to apply what I learned to my art practice!!!
