This book was my companion in the toilet for the past months - I recommend this use. The book’s chapters are short; and the text is simple and straightforward, which makes it the perfect pooping book.

Content wise - it was less mind blowing than I expected. I feel like maybe for people that don’t already have an art practice, or haven’t received art education, it may be very interesting and helpful. But to me, it felt like a simple reflection and collection of the art process. Which is nice to have, but I didn’t feel like I learnt anything knew per say.

Overall, a nice light read! 🫶🧡🫂

I think Rick could take
some of his own advice and do a more ruthless edit. There’s lots of good stuff in there but you could’ve used fewer pages to say what he wanted to say.

I'm definitely in the School of Elizabeth Gilbert and Big Magic way of this kind of stuff. This is to say, nothing groundbreaking from my POV but I can see people finding value in some of these insights. It definitely had some "RIGHT ON!" moments for me, but overall it didn't do a whole lot for me.

I went through this book as an audiobook read by Rick Rubin himself, and the gong at the end of each chapter was just a bit extra for me.

DID NOT FINISH

Mm, na.

I liked the little snippets, kinda like mini chapters. A few probably would've done the trick - there really didn't seem much need for it to be so long. Look around and see what's hidden, listen out for the quiet things among the noise. And that's about it.

Having said that, I don't think I got far into it at all. The whole thing with the appendix and the magical message from a random page in a random book that he happened to be browsing at a bookshop while he should have been on his way to hospital... Come on. Glad you're ok, but maybe writing off medical advice for the equivalent wisdom of that found in a glossy magazine astrology column isn't quite the flex you think it is.

The things he says are true, but nothing particularly struck me.
