I liked the historical aspect of black Americans during the Great Depresssion. I wish there had been more details. Bud’s journey to escape the orphanage and foster home was humorous. The story told through an an eleven year old’s point of view would be enjoyable for kids, and the ending was heartwarming.

A readable Newbery winner with an endearing, relatable, spunky-but-polite protagonist: Bud (not Buddy!). I liked the history that was introduced to the young readers through the story: race issues, unionizing railroad workers, Hoovervilles, the jazz era. What was especially neat was that two of the main characters were based on people from the author's own grandfathers (though you don't find that out until the "afterword").

I do feel like the story ended a little abruptly, but for some reason I still "really liked" reading this one -- I'll give it four stars for being engaging and enjoyable.

An excellent book

This was such a good book! I didn't think it would be something that I would enjoy so much, but I was captivated by the story. Bud is a character who will stay with me for a long time.

good story about a boy thinking he found his father, but turns out he had found his Mom's dad, and why she left in the first place

A heartwarming read, and definitely to be experienced by all ages even though it may be advertised as a children’s book. Narrates very well the struggles of black americans in the early 1900s, and the motivation and strength that hope of family can bring. It’s easy to see a little of ourselves in Bud no matter where we come from.
