This is such a sweet book. I think Curtis oversimplifies the struggles Bud goes through, but considering the audience, it’s understandable. Bud is a funny and likeable character, and the mix of humor and tragedy makes this an enjoyable read. It deals with some heavy topics in a way young readers can understand.

There are some characters that are introduced that have no relevance to the text whatsoever. If the whole train scene didn't exist, I'm pretty sure the book would be exactly the same.
