Wonderful tale about the determination of a young man to know his daddy. Told from Bud's point of view, you read in his speech, his lingo to learn about the difficulties of the Great Depression, being "of color" & an 'orphan'.
I read this book as a kid, and though I forget the specific narrative of it, I know that it made a big impression on me as the title crosses my mind every so often. I would go on to read another four or five books by Christopher Paul Curtis because of how much I enjoyed this one. This novel taught me about the black experience in 20th century America through the eyes of a boy that dreams, both irrational fear and courage, and a boyish goofiness just like I did. In hindsight this is the book that sparked my appreciation for historical fiction.
I love this book so much. It was so hilarious. I first discovered [a:Christopher Paul Curtis|6846|Christopher Paul Curtis|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1219646570p2/6846.jpg] after reading his first novel, [bc:The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963|108077|The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963|Christopher Paul Curtis|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1303497237s/108077.jpg|4593761]. Which was awesome, by the way. After that, I had to get my hands on something else he had written and found this.
Bud, Not Buddy, is the story of a young orphan named Bud, not Buddy. Hence, the title. Before she died, Bud's mom told him to never let anyone call him Buddy because it sounded demeaning. So now Bud is alone, being sent from foster home to foster home in the middle of the Great Depression. Bud keeps a suitcase with him at all times that contains important things. Including, a flyer his mother once got upset about. And Bud suspects , the man on the cover is his father. So, after escaping his abusive foster home, he goes on a quest to find his so-called father and have a family.
It was funny and sweet. When I read it, I laughed, which probably made people wonder why I was laughing at a book. I just fell in love with Bud and his story.
Oh, and the ending was pretty awesome, too. :)

I should have loved this book more- history, Jazz, spunky young underdog,... and it wasn’t a bad book, I think I just went in with too high of expectations. I absolutely love Watson’s Go to Birmingham (by the same author). This did not move me as much. But I still found it enjoyable.

Gentle story about a boy working through his troubles during the depression. None of his problems seem to have real teeth and he escapes them with relative ease. Still a good read for young children.

If it isn’t, this book should be a classic of children’s literature. It’s absolutely delightful, disguising how also very educational/informative it is.
His name is Bud, not Buddy! I loved going on the adventures with Bud to find his dad while also seeing the hardships that were faced by most people during the Great Depression, especially in Black communities. This was a social commentary overall but also just a look into the mind of a little Black boy trying to get through life with so much love in his heart Bud finding his grandfather instead of his dad surprised me and I’m happy how the story came together in the end

A cute story of a boy trying to find home in a harsh world. However, an underwhelming ending.
