This was - I don't know what to say other than amazing. It's been a very long time since I've read a book the way I read this - virtually unable to put it down.
Some review said it was Game of Thrones in space and I am pleased to report that nothing could be further from the truth because it was way more interesting and well thought out than that.
It feels real. The universe and the technology and the stakes and the world building all feels real. Very highly recommend for people looking for true sci fi.

I wasn't hooked right away, but I'm glad I stuck with it because the payoff was worth it. Quite an enjoyable read.
Some of the characterizations were flawed, Cavalon feels a bit too smart and capable for example, but I can see how spreading some of those actions around to other characters could've detracted from the tale. And Rake's leadership skills are starting to coalesce by the end of the book, but wasn't she supposed to have been a formidable leader all along? All in all those are small gripes in what really is a fun adventure and what's shaping up to be a compelling series.
