What a gripping story that broke my heart! This book is so much more than a love story. It deals with love, race, and the justice (injustice) system that we still deal with today. I hated how the book ended! However, its truth and reality. I will be thinking about this book for awhile.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nice story line kept wondering what was going to happen next. Wished I would have gotten more perspective from the leading lady character, but still a good read

This was a powerful read on what truly makes a marriage sustainable. Roy and Celestial have been married for less than 2 years when he is arrested for rape and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He is innocent but that makes no difference to the small town police and he and Celestial are left trying to figure out a way to make the best of the situation. Tayari Jones tells an impactful story that is not so much an indictment on the judicial system in the US (it would have been very easy to make it about this); but this book is more about how much stress a marriage can take especially one that hasn't yet really stood the test of time. Varying viewpoints tell the story and I really appreciated seeing everyone's point of view.m I had the benefit of listening to the audiobook (voices were perfect) while reading along and that helped me to take in every word. I highly recommend reading An American Marriage and I'll be seeking out more from this author.

Bottom line for me is this book was one of the best books I have read in quite awhile.

The writing captures you from the start and once you start the book it is hard to put down.

The story was told from three POVs and in letters. The story is multi-layered and explores so many topics that are timely and also universal (the American justice system especially concerning black men, prejudices, marriage, relationships, parents, families).

The characters were fully developed so you really feel for each one of them. I appreciated that no character is bad or totally good. They all come across as being so human you feel like the story could be non-fiction.

Highly recommend this book.

Love and time. What would you do if time was stripped away and all you had were lackluster memories of someone you were supposed to be with forever?
This book, much like Little Fires Everywhere, explores those thought provoking morally grey situations the characters must go through. It also highlights the problems with the justice system and the prejudices it still has to this day. I’m glad I finally got around to reading this book!

What an amazing book. From the beginnings of romance through unthinkable but all too common wrongful imprisonment, Jones invites readers to see the lives of three individuals intimately, exploring what it means to really, truly love.
